Audience Member Another funny, short duel between Chaplin and Campbell. Though I felt disappointed with Charlie here, he seemed a little lazy. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review eric b "The Adventurer" has a misleading title ("The Convict" would be better), but it's a fun, entertaining short. Chaplin escapes from prison and falls into high society after rescuing some upper-crust folks who fall off a beach pier. He spends the rest of the film stealing drinks, kicking rivals and dodging suspicion. Did Chaplin invent the familiar gag where someone temporarily "hides" by putting a lampshade over his head and standing rigid? Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The Adventurer is one of Charlie's most solid shorts. A large number of his Mutual shorts feel uneven but The Adventurer is hilarious throughout. It's not really one of Charlie's best or most funny, but it's a pretty damn good time. There are some moments that are at a magnitude only Charlie could achieve. He does this one trick with glasses that is dumbfounding. I've seen it fifty times and still can't figure out how he did it! Charlie never ceases to amaze me. Every film that I see him in, I learn something new about him that only increases my respect for him, which surprises me, because every time it happens I feel like it's impossible for it to happen again. Charlie Chaplin was a treasure. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Another Chaplin short I liked. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member The Adventurer (1917) is the last of the 12 short films Chaplin made in association with the Mutual Film Corporation. The story revolves around The Tramp, who has recently escaped from prison with 4 guards hot on his tail. Needless to say this results in hilarious and imaginative slapstick humour where Chaplin is once again perfect as both director and actor. Our beloved hero soon finds himself welcomed into the bosom of a wealthy family after saving them from drowning in a pier. Eric Campbell is also at his best in this short film, as he does his best to undo The Tramp's affections for the beautiful Edna Purviance. Amongst the best scenes in the film is The Tramps hilarious introduction, in which he emerges from underneath the sand on a beach only to be staring down the barrel of the gun of one of his pursuers. Although Chaplin made other fantastic short films including The Immigrant (1917) and The Cure (1917), I believe that The Adventurer (1917) is his best work. All of the films featured can be found on youtube so please give them a watch and keep an open mind...once you let Chaplin into your heart you can enjoy hours upon hours of the most joyous footage in cinema history.
