Ted B 3.3 stars; A Philo Vance detective movie... very sophisticated in a 1935 sense. Detective movies were all the rage in that era. Philo Vance was played by Paul Lucas, who actually won an Academy Award for Best Actor later in his career. However, in this production, he stayed within the lines in playing a debonair detective.... also, the rage in that era. And ahh, the 'who dunnit' mystery aspect of the movie. It was done, in the tradition of a Charlie Chan Movie.... plenty of suspects and plenty of red herrings pointing you in the wrong direction. As a side note; also appearing in the film, earlier in her career, was Miss Rosalind Russell.... pretty cool. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/06/24 Full Review Steve D Strong return to form for the series. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/05/24 Full Review Audience Member Lukas isn't a perfect fit as Philo Vance but does a good job nonetheless. The real reason to catch this is to get a glimpse of Rosalind Russell early in her career. At this point she was starting to get mired in, as she referred to them, "Lady Mary" roles all dignity, stiff upper lip and little humor. This part hints at the skillful comedienne she was to become. As for the mystery it's not terribly hard to figure out but it's stylishly shot with a good supporting cast. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member philo vance is back with another case to solve Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member not bad B movie fare and another in the philo vance murder mystery series.
