In a film based on actual events, when Ferdinand Waldo Demara Jr. (Tony Curtis) is arrested by the U.S. Coast Guard, the authorities discover that Demara has had many different identities. In a series of flashbacks, Demara's life story is revealed. After quitting high school, he joined the Army with faked papers and -- when his lie was detected -- stole the identity of a monk. After that, Demara traveled the world, assuming the identity of a sailor, a prison warden, a teacher and a doctor.
