Often called the worst director in the history of cinema, Ed Wood is nevertheless a beloved figure among cult-film aficionados for his oddball productions. This documentary takes a look back at Wood's unique career at the margins of 1950s Hollywood, speaking to those who loved him and hated him. Bela Lugosi Jr. discusses his father's work in the abysmal "Plan 9 From Outer Space," while a Baptist reverend recalls how he was tricked into financing the film.

dave s The Haunted World of Edward D. Wood Jr. is, in many ways, as peculiar as Wood's films. Consisting primarily of oddly staged interviews with those from Wood's entourage interspersed with footage from his movies, the documentary won't offer much insight into Wood's life for anyone who has more than just a passing knowledge of the man. The general consensus seems to be that he was a charismatic man afflicted with some deeply rooted issues who had a passion for making films despite having no perceivable talent. Surprisingly, there is an underlying sense from some that he was "the Orson Welles of B movies," which seems a bit odd for anyone who has seen any of the godawful messes that he directed. Equally surprising is the candor and insight provided by Vampira, who seems to understand Wood more than any of his more intimate peers. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member It is both sad and uplifting at times, but always filled with colorful memories about the best and worst sides of film's most enthusiastic (yet utterly untalented) director. The Haunted World is very enlightening and interesting, Ed Wood fans get to know the man behind such films as Plan 9 from Outer Space and Glen or Glenda personally through the memories of his friends, employees, and family members. This documentary also branches out into short documentaries about those closest to Ed Wood and the stars of his most successful film, Plan 9. Today's game of the day is the very strange and surreal Billy Hatcher & The Giant Egg from the Sonic Team at SEGA for the GameCube. I told you it was a strange game. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Just an absolutely terrific documentary about "the worst director of all time." Getting to see the original cast speak about Ed is really quite amazing. And although this movie is entertaining and informative, it is also quite sad. Still, fans of Mr. Wood, and maybe even people who aren't will find this movie as amazing as I did. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent! Though the presence of Dolores Fuller and Vampira, almost worshiping Ed Wood since kind of hypocrite. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
