Gertrude F It's very fast-paced with an engaging story line. However, I didn't particularly enjoy the camera work, and this movie does require some prior understanding of china. I was initially annoyed by the seemingly stupid ending (why didn't he just wear the bullet proof vest?), but upon further thought, the ending is very much symbolic. The story highlights a theme of social hierarchy and the extreme notions one is willing to go though in order to satisfy it. The movie is very effective at prompting emotional responses- especially the ending. Overall, would recommend. It's definitely a very fun and interesting watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/01/23 Full Review Audience Member lots of suspense. It drags a little at times but overall a good film. will watch it again. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member A tongue-in-cheek comedy about a cop fighting for self-respect in a dinky little Chinese province. Pretty funny, a little weird and loopy at times, but also really cute. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member An absolutely amazing film that sadly, you probably need to know Chinese to fully appreciate. The cinematography for this film is amazing and kept me on the edge of my seat. However, the best part of this movie is the dialogue which puts this movie squarely in the comedy genre, for CHINESE-speaking viewers. Too much of the movie is dependent on references to Asian culture that it would be puzzling to viewers who did not grow up in that environment. The main character is condemned for not being compelling because he is not a perfect man but that is exactly what makes his character so real. Everyone and every experience in this movie is an artful depiction of what I have encountered while growing up in China. The different ways the characters talked had me and family keeling over in tears from laughter. Bottom line, if you know Chinese and have lived in Beijing for a length of time, you might like it. If you haven't, good luck. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member (***): A well-made film, with cinematography that I won't forget anytime soon. There are some beautiful, poetic moments here mixed in with the stress of the main character. A good Chinese film.
