This expansive drama follows Kariya (Kazuo Kitamura), an engineer from Tokyo, as he deals with the natives of a remote island. The inbred and highly eccentric Futori family is shunned by most of the other islanders, but Kariya must work with the strange clan in order to construct a well that will supply water to the sugar mill. As Kariya goes about his job, he encounters various Futoris, including the mystically inclined Uma (Yasuko Matsui) and her disgraced brother, Nekichi (Rentarô Mikuni).

Audience Member Profound Desire of the Gods takes its time reaching its final point, but when it does, you realize it was classic Imamura all along: funny, provocative, disturbing and true. B+/A- Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member astounding in every way. a sprawling, epic, poetic, shocking and always riveting work of the highest cinematic art Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Is incest the Profound Desire of the Gods? It seems that way, as that, eh, trend does seem to cross many gods of different cultures. So if it's good enough for the Gods, why not humans? And if inbreeding is kind of a bad thing that causes many issues, does that mean that the ancient gods were all crazy inbred hillbillies? It would explain much. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member It could be a lot shorter but neverless its still a interesting story with lots to enjoy, some fasinating performances on show keep it ticking along, and the story itself about a family with issues inside the family and to others on the island comes off well. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Jäklar vilken överraskning, vilken originell och galet bra film! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Amazing! I can't get this one out of my head. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews
