Audience Member I grabbed this movie because I am a cab driver. I didn't expect it would grab me back. Right from the opening credits the realism struck me. The radio banter played behind the music sounded spot on. Filming appears done under controlled conditions in actual cars. At least there's none of the usual tell-tale signs of blue or green-screening canned footage on a sound stage. It doesn't take long for drama to kick in. The customers, boring or humorous, give way to the real fears cabbies face every time one of their doors are opened and a new fare gets in. Obviouly someone well versed in the taxi industry played a part in creating this film. One driver likes to scoop fares from rival companies. In another scene, the dispatcher must deal with a driver who lies about his location. A long-car is a common tactic to get a call you're not entitled to. Another driver earns a little extra by switching bills the passenger gives her for lower ones and then demanding the full fare. But reality is just window dressing. The film's highllights are the characters. Some are happy. Some are sad. All are troubled. While most of the film is populated by talented actors with limited recognition, the one notable exception is Al Waxman. Most will remember his recurring role as a judge on Cagney and Lacey. For older Canadians he will always be The King of Kensington. This was not his last work, but I felt a chill as he tried to convince the company's owner to give him back his job as dispatcher. "I just can't sit around there anymore, waiting for the end to come. I wanna die with a microphone in my hand telling some cabbie to go to hell." He was dead within a year of this film's release.
