Nancy Banks-Smith Guardian I am resistant to Matt Lucas as some germs are to antibiotics - it's not the germ's fault nor the antibiotic's - but, like all comics, he can act. Feb 27, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member I found myself quite surprised, on rewatch, after hating this film as a kid that i had now learned to like it. It's lowkeyness played in it's favour, delivering a time on all accounts that could only be described as pleasant. The comedy is funny - laughout loud hilarious at some points, most characters aren't likable but are charming and interesting to watch which goes along with how nice the set design is. It really feels like a film from the forties and i was again surprised that i liked the costuming for the animals and reminded me of what they did for Into The Woods- for the wolf. The script is continuously enjoyable and relates to every character perfectly. In addition this film feels more of an indie film in it's lack of goals for each animal and lack of concrete story. It's a shame this movie didn't appeal to kids, as everyone i asked when i was younger ALSO said they didn't like it and most of them now do. Then again, this movie feels like it's written for adults, not because of any langauge or violence (i mean god, no) but beacuse it's VERY nostalgic. I'm not fan of the ending in any sense but i think it's fitting considering it's indie tone and what the characters would have done. What a purely pleasant, nostalgic experience. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Utterly adorable. The cast are near perfect matches (besides Matt Lucas, who IS perfect). They brightly act as their animals rather than rely on makeup, which is smartly kept subtle for more of the characters believable humanity. The script also is just loyal enough to Grahame's work to capture its wonder essence. As well as visually poetic, all it needed was to be a tad quicker & shorter, but really only a tad. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member So, after reading "The Wind in the Willows" we loaded up the queue with several film adaptations and, while none of them were completely satisfying, this one seemed to me the best. I wasn't particularly happy with the last half hour's departure from the book, but the rest of it was true and Mr. Toad was well played. In fact, the make-up to make Toad, Rat, Mole and Badger look like what they are without being over-the-top was well done. As far as the characters go, this, like the other adaptations, don't seem to get Mole right. This one makes him too cowardly. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
