Suzanne L These witty, mischievous, inventive, and sometimes thoughtful sometimes bittersweet animations offer many takes on what's possible in this field. And, beyond that, it's a testimony to the scope of the human imagination. With so much darkness in the world, this evening of outstanding animations put me in touch with those qualities that are best in us and endure, including that human quality of curiosity and wonder. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/12/17 Full Review Lauren H This is a nice event: more of an occasion than a film. You get to celebrate the creativity and talents of filmmakers from all around the world to whom you would never otherwise have access. There is some world-class animation here, sometimes better than what you see with the Oscar-nominated animated shorts. You'll like some, you won't be so keen on others, and some will stay with you for a long, long time. Highly recommended. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/11/17 Full Review Meagan H This is a terrific collection of animated shorts. I've seen The Animation Show of Shows for a few years now. I discovered, thanks to last year's collection (2016) that I really enjoyed abstract animation synced to music. Liked it enough to want to find more and to make one of my own. In this one, I particularly liked 'Casino' and 'Island'. Aside from my personal favorites, I noticed a contemplative tone to the selections this year. In particular, I'd put forward 'Hangman', a piece on personal responsibility about injustice (1964) as well as 'Everything', a piece using a text that talks about the interconnectedness of everything (and uses the Unity gaming system (?) for design). Although, there are many that I can't stop thinking about when I leave the theater, this year it's these two. Highly recommended. When it comes to your town, see it. If it doesn't come to your town, why not? Ask Mr. Diamond to see how to fix that. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/11/17 Full Review Laura W Beyond incredible. So much creativity, so much magic, I was in heaven watching this year's Show of Shows, my mouth agape. Please don't miss it. So many gems. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/10/17 Full Review Louis T The Animation Show of Shows is a DREAM for all animation/movie lovers. I got inspired by the classic restored version "Hangman" by Paul Julian & Les Goldman. We are impressed with "The Chameleon " "Gokurosama" by MOPA (Will blow your mind!) and "Next Door" plus many more! Great stuff and don't miss it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/11/17 Full Review Isabel M Saw the Animation Show of Shows with my best friend ! :) We absolutely loved it. Dear Basketball and Gokurosama were amazing! John DeFore Hollywood Reporter An exceptional program that starts off strong and only gets better as it goes, the 19th Annual Animation Show of Shows overflows with charm while containing more provocative observations about the nature of existence. Dec 29, 2017 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg New York Times Like most omnibus programs, the offerings are a mixed bag, but this year's 16 titles showcase a gratifying range of styles and subjects, with work that includes veterans and newcomers, the experimental and the commercial. Dec 28, 2017 Full Review Charles Solomon Los Angeles Times For viewers weary of the overly detailed look of many recent American CG features, the "Show of Shows" offers a welcome reminder that an animated film can be as intimate and personal as a signature. Dec 12, 2017 Full Review Al Hoff Pittsburgh City Paper This curated 90-minute program of 16 animated short films from around the world offers some laughs, some gorgeous visuals and a fair amount of reflection on troubled times and assorted anxieties. Jan 17, 2018 Full Review Eric Monder Film Journal International The 19th Annual Animation Show of Shows is a tough call for those seeking consistency. But there are certainly enough enticing shorts within the package to make the weaker portions acceptable to overlook. Dec 28, 2017 Full Review Mark R.
