Matt R "More power. More risk. Now it is steel against steel. Two objects can occupy the same space at the same time under proper conditions. He knows his theory is sound. It's all down on paper. A few precious pages that represent years of research and experimentation. But he doesn't know that his obsession will transform a man into a monster. A man whose life will be changed as he crosses the threshold in the fourth dimension." - Dr. Tony Nelson 4D MAN (1959) entertainingly explores the dimensions of drama, horror & science fiction. James Congdon (The Left Handed Gun) is Dr Tony Nelson and Robert Lansing (many TV shows of the '60s & 70's including Gary Seven on Star Trek) is Dr Scott Nelson. They are brothers and scientists pushing the boundaries of science. They both get romantically involved with their fellow researcher Linda Davis played by Lee Meriwether (1955's Miss America & a prolific performer in television of the 60's & 70's). Everything turns dark when Linda favors Tony and Scott begins to pass through walls. Jack H. Harris and Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr. had made THE BLOB (1958) and rolled that success into 4D MAN. The hip jazz score by Ralph Carmichael (who also did the music for THE BLOB & arrangements for Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby) is great too. The talent on screen and behind the camera combine to make 4D MAN a captivatingly good motion picture. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/24 Full Review Edward K It is actually decent and watchable. Good plot. Kept my attention. Kinda reminder me of "Hollow Man". Good acting. Robert Lansing was a big star. And the beautiful Lee Merriweather (long before "Time Tunnel". And a brief role by a very young Patty Duke. Decent special effects. The only thing I didn't like was that awful music. Kind of hippy jazz with too much bongo. But overall it's watchable. Pretty decent as these things go. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/10/24 Full Review Blobbo X Weird jazz score completely incongruous with action. Lead man is poor man's William Shatner. Special effects out-dated. Ending needs fluffing out, too abrupt. Still...worth watching if never saw before. At least, was for this couch blob. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/30/23 Full Review william k Imaginative low-budget sci-fi thriller compensates its rather poor special effects with the uniqueness of its premise and well-handled, suspenseful narrative. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Poor pacing, misdirected, disruptive jazz score. Lee Meriwether is easy on the eyes Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Two brothers, scientists Scott and Tony Nelson, develop an amplifier which enables a person to enter a 4th dimensional state, allowing him to pass through any object. Stars: Robert Lansing, Lee Meriwether, James Congdon, Patty Duke. I'll say this about 4D man it has one fabulous jazz score composed by Ralph Carmichael . 4D Man also introduced the sexy bomb shell Lee Meriwether in her film debut;sexy Lee Meriwether is best remembered for her roles in a few science fiction/fantasy cult productions made between 1966 and 1969. Batman: The Movie (1966), Star Trek (1966), The Time Tunnel (1966) and Land of the Giants (1968). As for the film its self. Look "The 4D Man" is no masterpiece, but it's definitely one of the more intriguing , sci-fi films of the '50s. 3D Man has an interesting premise, touching upon other explorative aspects of quantum physics such as bombarding elements with subatomic particles and experimentation with intensified electromagnetic fields. Considering the relatively low budget the film had wonderful special effects, solid performances and a much more adult tone than the usual '50s sci-fi flick make this a keeper.
