THE ADULTS follows Eric (Michael Cera) as he returns home for a short visit and finds himself caught between reuniting with his sisters and chasing a victory with his old poker group. As the trip extends, Eric finds it increasingly difficult to avoid confrontations and revelations as his carefully constructed façade of his adulthood gives way to old childhood conflicts. While Maggie (Sophia Lillis) attempts to recreate the intimate world the three of them once shared, Eric and Rachel (Hannah Gross) are faced with the divide between their childhood selves and the adults they are now.

Critics Consensus

The Adults finds enough profundity in grief and strained sibling bonds to overcome an occasionally aimless story, with subtly rewarding results.

Thelma Adams AARP Movies for Grownups While The Adults lurches from amusing to cringeworthy in tone, it successfully zeroes in on the raw emotions that both bind and separate this quirky trio that can’t seem to harmonize again. Rated: 4/5 Aug 22, 2023 Full Review Kyle Smith Wall Street Journal A sad but affecting character study that has nothing like a plot but instead ruminates on loss, distrust and misunderstanding within a fraying family. Aug 19, 2023 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times Michael Cera delivers subtle greatness as an eccentric man visiting his sisters after years away. Rated: 3/4 Aug 18, 2023 Full Review Alex Heeney Seventh Row The Adults was one of the best surprises of 2023: an indie-spirited film somehow sponsored by a studio, with three of the best performances of the year. Mar 22, 2024 Full Review Damon Wise Deadline Hollywood Daily The Adults is a comedy-drama that doesn’t seem to deliver much of either, and that gray, in-between state just isn’t appealing anymore. Oct 4, 2023 Full Review Chance Solem-Pfeifer Willamette Week The performances are all distinctly sad and believable, and Cera expertly channels his onscreen neuroses into a suspiciously over-controlled, serious-man façade. eric g Was kind of Dark and interesting Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/24/23 Full Review Wayne M The Adults is a wry and compassionate film about sibling bonds and past memories. Nothing much happens and it does wander a bit but I found it interesting and involving. The film is about a brother and his two sisters. Their shared history is conflicted and at times painful. Eric takes a short trip back home and connects with Rachel and Maggie. His relationship with Maggie is OK but it is definitely strained with Rachel. The film gently takes us through the shared relationship. It's sometimes painful and ruminative, sometimes happy and hopeful. Eric also gets distracted whilst he is there by a poker game, with which he gets very obsessed. This a gentle and observant film about the bonds between siblings. Michael Cera, Hannah Gross and Sophia Lillis are all very good in the lead roles. A small film but an interesting one nonetheless. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/06/25 Full Review Ian Pierre G Boring and slow... the arguments using little voices are terrible to watch. Not worth the time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/26/24 Full Review Memphis M Honestly, I started watching this movie on a plane and regret I wasted 30 minutes trying to get into it. So slow, so boring, such sad lives (but not even sad enough to cry over) I can't imagine it redeemed itself later. I rarely give up on a movie I've spent that much time watching. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/01/24 Full Review Jason P This could have been a decent movie. Michael Cera mailed this one in. Couldn't even bother to learn the lines of songs. Tsk tsk Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/24 Full Review jim i Good-hearted; maybe a but quirky. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/29/24 Full Review Read all reviews
