Critics Consensus

The Adventures of Pinocchio is an admirably faithful adaptation of the source material, but it may be too frightening for younger viewers -- and too dull for older ones.

John Petrakis Chicago Tribune The filmmakers have created a pretty boring movie. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 9, 2020 Full Review Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader It's a very pleasant version, less cruel and nightmarish than Disney's cartoon predecessor, lacking a fairy godmother, and probably closer to Carlo Collodi's original story in other respects as well. Jul 9, 2020 Full Review Joe Leydon Variety A lively and pleasant piece of work, one that likely will be a staple of video libraries in many households for years to come. Mar 26, 2009 Full Review JK Sooja Common Sense Media Scary live-action version has violence, guns, and monsters. Rated: 2/5 Feb 18, 2021 Full Review David Parkinson Radio Times Despite state-of-the-art digital technology and creatures from the Jim Henson workshop, this is a disappointing rendition of Carlo Collodi's enchanting morality tale. Rated: 2/5 Jul 9, 2020 Full Review Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed A bland reworking of the classic tale Rated: 1/5 Nov 29, 2007 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Whoever rated this low is tripping, this was a heartfelt, emotional movie, gets you in the feels. I love this timeless classic just like I love the cartoon timeless classic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/22/25 Full Review Derek L Whilst the Adventures of Pinocchio stayed faithful to the source material, however it does have moments where it can get rather creepy in terms of its tone and direction. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/13/24 Full Review Jessica M My favorite version of Pinocchio!! I watched this many more times than the original Disney version as a kid. Maybe some people don't have the nostalgia that I have for it, but still the costumes are amazing and I love how well the actor plays Gippetto. Yes a few frustrating situations that Pinocchio gets himself into, I like to laugh them off lol, nonetheless a masterpiece in my eyes. I see some low ratings because people find it creepy?? Y'all are hilarious. It's sweet, lovely and I always cry at the end. I love this film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/24/24 Full Review Memphis A Definitely better than Disney live action version. The effects are very good especially Pinocchio himself. Pepe voice Lipe seeking at that bad I couldn't even notice it was wrong. The movie fixs up many things wrong with other apadtions. Definitely a must see. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/28/23 Full Review Michael M This Children Adaption of Pinocchio is so Nostalgic to my Childhood. They don't make family movies like this anymore. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/08/22 Full Review jacob b A better Hollywood live-action adaptation of Pinocchio than the more recent one that came out, The Adventures of Pinocchio scores points for being truer to the text and Jim Henson's Creature Shop do a good job bringing the titular character to life whilst also having a reasonably threatening villain and even some decent songs but the weird casting choices, inevitable comparisons to the Disney classic (it still features things like the cricket conscience who was only an ascended extra when Disney adapted the film), poor CGI even for 1996 an unnecessary film-exclusive subplot about Geppetto's crush on a woman who married his brother and, in all honesty, being a bit dull for older audiences. Perhaps this movie would've been better if they committed more fully to a darker tone (this was from the director of the 1990 Ninja Turtles movie, after all - which, amusingly, has its own Pleasure Island sequence - meaning that he could've made a live-action Pinocchio film with such a tone work) but as is, it's a movie that, while nowhere near the dumpster fire critics made it out to be, I'm not losing a lot of sleep over its commercial failure either (though having a trailer that spoils the ending REALLY didn't help; I don't care if everybody knows how the story ends, that was still a dick move). Less wooden than Robert Zemeckis' version, that's for sure. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
