David Ehrlich indieWire While "The Affair" rather adamantly insists that life doesn't adhere to the idealized cleanliness of modern design, this hollow adaptation also never allows itself to share in the forward-thinking courage of its architecture. Rated: C- Mar 6, 2021 Full Review Guy Lodge Variety A film best enjoyed as a series of chic production stills. Mar 5, 2021 Full Review Odie Henderson RogerEbert.com The characterizations are paper thin, the constant letter-reading narration is dry, and the sex scenes are anti-erotic to the point of parody. Rated: 1.5/4 Mar 5, 2021 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue Despite some lovely architecture and solid performances, this tedious and uninvolving period romance can't fulfill its epic aspirations. Mar 12, 2021 Full Review Marc Burrows HeyUGuys The dullest film you will ever see about forbidden love set against the most violent and volatile period of modern history, happening in an unspeakably beautiful house. Rated: 2/5 Mar 9, 2021 Full Review James Berardinelli ReelViews History buffs, especially those with an affinity for World War II stories and/or an interest in 20th century Czechoslovakia, may enjoy what The Affair has to offer. Lez B A beautifully shot movie and enjoyed the lesbian romance element. The backdrop of WWII and latterly soviet era was well intended but it skimmed over some pretty crucial moments which made the film much less hard hitting than it could have been. Worth a watch, especially for anyone looking for a queer storyline, but not the deep social commentary it could have been. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Jaclyn B I loved it!! Really captured the time period and finally had a happy lesbian ending. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/24 Full Review Casey C It could do with a few more Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/19/23 Full Review shadia m The idea the movie seeks to express is a remarkable one, along with a fulfilling historical context, for me, a big fan of history, that idea is amazing. However, the movie is not capable of expressing it correctly at all, the inadequate pace of the movie, frankly, is unacceptable. Adding to the fact that the characters are soulless and not adequately explored. The love story that is portrayed makes no sense because nothing is important explained. The movie lost itself along the way. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
