John D Shockingly bad for a movie with several well known actors. Cinematographer obviously had little in the way of lighting as his only real tool was his camera aperture to set the time of day. Several shots are underexposed and contrast an otherwise daylight scene. The acting isn't terrible and the plot itself, up to the strange climax, isn't a terrible one. The story itself is overly drawn out but never, ever fleshed out and the ending, at least the one I saw, made no sense at all. Typical stuff for low budget movies of this era. What kept me interested, plot-wise, was the anticipation that the two key actors would realize their relationship to each other, which is set up in the opening act, and is really the only decently produced part of the movie. Special effects were not great, for the early 80s. The cave vortex was pretty cool and they put some effort into that. But why soft focus the vortex scene? It took me a while to realize it was an intentional choice and not another camera mishap. It seems that, other than the solid actor roster, an explosion scene might have been one of the biggest expenses. It comes out of nowhere and is quite impressive. Rumor has it the pyrotechnics actually damaged some hydro wires clearly visible in the shot, and left the town without electricity. All-in-all, I enjoyed it, mainly because I get a kick out of movies that are so poorly made they somehow reach some sort of transcendence. Objectively, however, this movie gets one star from me.
