Russ G Clicked on this on TCM for two reasons: Robert Morley gets 2nd billing and I figured it might be an interesting mystery even though I'm lousy at following them. Tony Randall is miscast as the Miss Christie's Belgian detective and it was apparently done as a farce based on the 10/15 minutes I spent on it. Looking at the cumulative rating now I figure I didn't miss anything. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review joe m "The Alphabet Murders" is a mildly amusing Agatha Christie outing that is played for comic effect with Tony Randall as Hercules Poirot doing a passable job. OK if you've got 90 minutes to spare but nothing more than that. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie fell flat as a thriller, as a comedy, as good acting, as well as writing. It was banal, and not even well cast. Tony Randall should have been at least a passable Poirot, but he was made a buffoon. Hastings was unbelievable. Japp was boring. The director spent a lot of shots of the cast getting in and out of cars, so I guess the script ran out of directions too. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Perhaps if you don't know the books or the characters it would be tolerable. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member In order to understand and appreciate the unique style of comedy in this movie, it is necessary to watch it more than once. Richard Brody New Yorker Tashlin creates a sort of live-action cartoon, with distorting angles yielding disorienting juxtapositions, whether from the explosive results of a dish of kidneys flambé or during balletic capers at a bowling alley. Aug 30, 2021 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews It was really as simple as ABC why this film was a dud, most of the suspense was lost in Tashlin's poorly conceived comic interpretation.
