Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard It's a devastating portrait of a man on the edge of madness, and not easy to forget. Rated: 4/5 Mar 16, 2010 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian This is a difficult, painful film, and hardly for everyone. It left me in a gibbering foetal ball in a corner of the cinema foyer. But in Jesper Ganslandt, Sweden has a new star director. Rated: 4/5 Mar 15, 2010 Full Review Edward Porter Times (UK) Jesper Ganslandt's film strikes me as an exercise in morbid intensity for its own sake, but it's certainly well done. Rated: 3/5 Mar 15, 2010 Full Review Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall This artful examination of a very dark soul isn't always easy to watch. But the film's bleak chill is mesmerising. Rated: 4/5 Mar 17, 2010 Full Review Allan Hunter Daily Express (UK) Sarri's great performance is what will keep you watching. Rated: 3/5 Mar 16, 2010 Full Review Philip French Observer (UK) Existential Scandinavian stuff, it holds the attention. Mar 15, 2010 Full Review Read all reviews

Ian E An amazing film, semi improvised, with the protagonist played by Olle Sarri receiving lines & direction through his Bluetooth headset, rather than a script. He delivers a coruscating meditative portrayal of a man on the brink of total implosion and despair. We are left to piece together the plot, whilst the jerky handheld camera follow a man operating eponymously and automatically on ape like instinct. Clutching at straws as his world is collapsing. Considering that the budget must have been tiny - the comparison with a typical Hollywood sanitised fantasy treatment of such events is stark. Not an easy watch nor one you'll forget. I watched this two years ago and have seen many other films since. Very few have stuck in my mind like The Ape which I recently re-watched and found to be no less gripping the second time around. Spectacular work. . Olle Sarri ist außergewöhnlich in seiner Rolle. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/29/22 Full Review Audience Member Boring, pretentious dross. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review keith w Fathomless and clueless miasma of confused plot and dialogue. A film that is not a real film 'with a real narrative'; as if it had 'cut and paste' bits from other movies that were randomly stuck together, creating an underwhelming cinematic chimera that leaves the viewer annoyed and disrespected. Ghastly mistake to spend resources on a piece of bad movie making. Not recommended. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Jesper Ganslandt's film is a very grim, intense and horrific study of a man who at first glance appears to be a rage-filled man --- but it goes a great deal further than rage. Olle Sarri is exceptional. An intense, but disturbing experience. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review razvan p well build, but too simplistic and negative.
