Robert Levin Newsday The movie looks great, it's conceptually interesting, and it has several memorable moments. But it's also interminable. Rated: 2/4 Jan 31, 2024 Full Review Robert Lloyd Los Angeles Times The Archies humanizes them by giving them humanity... Dec 16, 2023 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com “The Archies” succeeds by not overthinking its very existence. Rated: 3/4 Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Ishita Sengupta OTTplay The problem plaguing the film is similar to what affected Akhtar’s previous work, the expansive new season of Made in Heaven. The politics, albeit correct, constantly hangs on the narrative. Jan 15, 2024 Full Review Shah Shahid The Movie Blog It’s a simple story about young kids who end up dealing with very adult concepts of capitalism and how they can bring change to the world around them. It may not be for audiences expecting more than that. Dec 29, 2023 Full Review Hannah Rose CBR The Archies re-imagines Riverdale as an Anglo-Indian community in 1960s India, resulting in a colorful, cheerful, and authentic take on the Archie mythos. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/13/24 Full Review Saurabh J Not sure why the movie was made. It seems like it smelled of nepotism in Bollywood. Just 15-20 minutes into the movie and I was like Yuck!!, I don't want to watch this. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review SL A Absolute blast...loved it so much...the experience was so fresh Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/03/24 Full Review Venkat I This is an outstanding movie. Successfully transplanted the names, costumes and lifestyle to India with a very plausible reason. Impeccable locations within India that bring Riverdale alive. Set in the 60s with superb musical performances - both period music from the 60s and modern songs - but well adapted for plausibility in the 60s. The story lines and characters so faithfully modernised that I am amazed - this is exceptional. The melodrama is done with enough flair to let you know that it's all in good fun. And yet the story line woven in between the melodrama is wistfully romantic and very delicately done indeed. It's play acting and real at the same time - a very difficult thing to achieve. It's of course Indian enough to still make sense - in fact it will make sense only to Indian audiences who still have a middle class morality value that fits with this interpretation of the 50s Archies. It will make no sense to those who never read this comic book as a child but for those who did - it's perfect. It's better than Grease in recreating the 50s and early 60s for the Indian audience - Cliff Richard and no baseball or American football - and way better than Riverdale which just went bizarro on the comic book - using the names and little else. Making it a musical was a brilliant idea. I will be going back to listen to the songs again - many were exceptional. Good Indianised Rock (and Roll). All in all a very very successful and well acted recreation with a "modern retro" setting. Modern- retro; melodramatic -good acting - the peculiar combination of words needed to describe this movie is a good indication of just how clever Zoya Akhtar has been in creating this masterpiece. Sadly the movie drags in the second half and 20 minutes could have been easily chopped off - but that's not a detraction from what is otherwise a picture perfect Indianised recreation of the Archies. They should have made a song or two out of some of the soppy stuff that dragged. The casting of Reggie Mantle and Hiram Lodge stand out. Archie, Jughead and Big Ethel (Dot.) are also excellent - just what they would be have been if they were Indian. Dot apparently did a lot of the songs. Hermione Lodge, Ricky Mantle and Dilton Doily also deserve mention for good treatment of their characters with good acting. Veronica is a disappointment but good enough.
