It's a movie about transformation, but the transformation is subtle, sensitive, and so well-played by Itsaso Arana. Go to Full Review

By not telling us too much about Eva, Trueba encourages us to peer into ourselves as we seek to identify with the character. Go to Full Review

Although the drama lacks tension, the images lack style, and the characters lack substance, the movie is nonetheless carried along by Arana's alert energy. Go to Full Review

The Virgin of August is a story about the conflict of getting older ... And it does it without preaching, without exaggerating conflicts, in fact it seems that nothing happens, only life and its possibilities as open as its end. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Alain E @AlainE Apr 10 Interesting watch with uncertain point. Is the pregnancy being revealed in the end another reference to the Virgin Mary, similar to Godard’s Hail Mary? We will never know. See more Art B 04/26/2022 Interesting slow moving vignettes with very few edits, little plot and plenty of lingering shots of the main character Eva fit the pace of a sleepy hot August in Madrid. I especially enjoyed the mysterious and ambiguous ending, but also enjoyed the slow pace and beautifully detailed low- contrast cinematography that lead to that unexpected end.
