Brent McKnight The Last Thing I See A slow burn narrative and mounting tension between the leads pumps some welcome, much needed electricity into the undead. [Full Review in Spanish] Rated: 2/5 Mar 19, 2020 Full Review Brendan Boyle PopMatters Amounting to one feature-length inciting incident, the low-budget zombie film The Battery will test the limits of even the most devoted horror fans' patience. Rated: 4/10 Mar 19, 2020 Full Review Michelle Swope Dread Central Something Else is a hell of a love story and a nightmarish monster movie and an overall fantastical experience. Rated: 5/5 Mar 19, 2020 Full Review Sarah Gopaul Digital Journal This is one of the best zombie films to be made in quite some time, owing much to Gardner's grasp of the genre and his on-screen chemistry with Cronheim. Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Scott Weinberg TheHorrorShow Taken as a two-person character study/reluctant buddy movie/legitimately novel slant on a very oft-told tale, there's certainly a lot to like here. Steve C Kind of feels low budget. Don't expect something like Zombieland with Woody Harrelson Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/26/24 Full Review Matthew B This film is effective in its attempt to make us care about the relationship between the two protagonists, who (for better or for worse) are stuck together to survive during the zombie apocalypse. The two main characters often have personal conflicts as a result of their forced close relationship and it creates a very tense atmosphere at times. Neither character is ever particularly wrong in their viewpoints and that makes you sympathetic towards both of them. I do wish we got to see the beginning of the outbreak and how our two heroes came to rely on each other, but it is sort of explained through dialogue so it is not the end of the world. I have extremely mixed feelings on the ending scene when they are stuck in the vehicle, on one hand it drags on for WAY too long, but I also feel this was an intentional effort by the filmmaker to make us feel a portion of the absolute claustrophobic insanity the characters are experiencing. When Mickey finally exits the car the tension you feel before he returns is absolutely nail biting! I recommend this film to any zombie fan looking for something they haven't seen yet. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review Jeff P This movie is 12 years old now, and it still holds up as one of my favorites. The dialogue, the cinematography, the idea that the zombies are a backdrop to the story, every bit of this film is impressive and well executed. The soundtrack and original score are fantastic as well. I wish there were more movies like this. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/08/24 Full Review alexander n shot in 15 days on a 6k budget? never rooted for two characters like that for a long, long time. brilliant. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/24 Full Review Emilliano Jr S An interesting, decent zombie drama. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/10/23 Full Review Lagrange P Horror suffers from Zombie fatigue these days, which is part of why this movie is so good. Another excellent film from writer/director/actor Jeremy Gardner, the Battery keeps the Zombies subordinate to the relationship between the characters, the increasing tension between them, and its ultimate resolution. The script is tight, sparse and well-written, the direction is tremendous, and the cinematography keeps the wide open spaces wide open and the claustrophobic spaces appropriately cramped. Solid performances and strong character development combines with quality filmmaking to wring the very most from the obviously limited budget. Gardner's formidable powers never seem disappoint. He knows the tropes, understands the audience, and delivers an appropriately frightening and thoughtful horror experience worthy of genre fans' attention.
