Audience Member Start a little slow. Then you discover one of the best american movies of last 20 years. With Herzog in mind Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member A very strong film about a lumber mill owner whom is having a tough time keeping his business afloat given the current world climate. His home life is good, until he receives a troubling letter from his daughter in college who has uncovered repressed memories of possibly sexual abuse. This is not a film for everyone. Its pace is very leisurely in that it chooses to explore the small Oregon town, taking minutes at a time to just watch the machines in the mill, or the hilltop of the town. Its similar to how Ozu would use still shots to evoke things about Japanese Society. The acting is very raw but at the same time perfect. Never manipulative or emotionally, Jost chooses to stay fixated on our characters for much longer then what is normal, as almost a means to peering into their souls. The scene between Ray and his wife when they first receive the letter is one of the most memorable scenes for me in the history of cinema. That being said its nearly perfectly executed, and heart felt. The only reason I couldn't give this film 5 stars is i feel that 30 minutes of this film could have been cut out without really effecting the meditative, contemplative state it is going for. American Independent Filmmaking at its best. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the most beautifully made films I have ever seen. Scene in the restaurant with the phone ringing is one of the most interesting, profound shots I have ever seen. Bothered by the lack of redemption (darkness) and the character who shows up and knows Ray's name, subsequently cursing him. Did we really need that? No. Film also has collection of the longest, slowest pans I have ever seen. They always seem to work amazingly. Something meaningful always shows up. Thy flesh out the movie, developing atmosphere and a sense of the real.   Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Read all reviews
