Jessica Scott Nightmarish Conjurings The unsettling performances do their best to sell this tale of lovers and demons, but the audience is left wondering why they should worry about the soul of a man who never had one to begin with. Diamond W An intelligent, entertaining and successful occult exposition, surpassing the limitations of it's budget. Like most substantial occult works of art, this film is not readily ingestible to unacquainted audiences. Interestingly, the relationship of this film to it's negative critics is analogous to Violet's affair with Lucas; she offers "profound wisdom", but his impatience, insecurity, resentment and intellectual hubris prevent his comprehension. Most professional critiques of this film are way off. It has only the most superficial resemblance to "Rosemary's Baby" or "Misery". Lucas is not Violet's boyfriend/lover, he is an immature iteration of a being that she has been perfecting for "centuries". The dialogue is precise, the plot and symbolism are focused, explaining clearly Violet's philosophy and process, despite Lucas's inhibiting confusion. The conclusion is satisfying and compelling, revealing absolute transformation and utter victory. The supporting characters are also highly entertaining in the form of two sardonic "angels", claiming to be Violet's parents, who mockingly suggest, over dinner, that Lucas kill himself. Then there's the imaginary psychologist who seems sympathetic to Lucas's hindering doubts. Several viewings suggested. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/28/23 Full Review Michelle Y The dialogue in this movie is so pretentious and cringe. The characters sound like a cross between a philosophy textbook and an English literature textbook. Really makes the characters feel so believable and natural *sarcasm* I rolled my eyes so hard and so often Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Engaging and excellent performances by the leads, but otherwise, this flick went on and on, seemingly much longer than its actual runtime and very very repetitive as well as repetitive…did I mention repetitive?… I found the story to be muddled beyond comprehension and to a great degree, belief. I cannot recommend this movie for even background noise… Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member This was quite the odd movie, but overall the acting was great and the oppressive atmosphere of the claustrophobic house the entire movie was in created tension that not many horror movies manage. The plot was sublime and the plot twist itself was as much disturbing as completely surprising. Good movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member this one lost my interest pretty quick; I dozed off a few times so I'm not even sure what happened, but I don't plan on rewatching. the little I did see was more than enough. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Gosling can act. I'm not sure how you pull off being a Jew that becomes a Neo-Nazi - but he does. He balances raw and refined.
