Rated 2/5 Stars •  Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/13/24 Full Review Audience Member Bonita Granville stars as a young girl from a wealthy family who is neglected by her wealthy parents and is largely looked after by the family servants. She befriends young Matthew 'Stymie' Beard, which leads to conflict with the family butler and eventually someone's death. Granville is sent to a boarding school where Dolores Costello helps sort her out. This is an amazingly odd film that's all over the map tonally. I honestly can't figure it out. The film seems pretty nonchalant about Granville befriending a black family, until it leads to a rather physically abusive conflict with the butler. Leo Gorcey actually wanders into the film to just push Granville into a river. It's kind of slapsticky one minute, ridiculously maudlin the next.
