Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com It's like The Three Stooges with bazookas. The Big 4 is way too long and talky, but you feel its impact when it explodes. Rated: 3/4 Dec 16, 2022 Full Review Christian Valentin Spectrum Culture The Big 4 is gory, gonzo, goofy and overflowing with the director’s signature mayhem that action fans know and love. Jan 6, 2023 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse Despite the somewhat overlong duration, “The Big 4” emerges as a highly entertaining movie, and definitely one of the best action films of the year. Rated: 7.5 Jan 4, 2023 Full Review Tori Preston Pajiba It’s part Tarantino, part Three Stooges, refreshingly original, and 100 percent heart. Jan 3, 2023 Full Review Brian Costello Common Sense Media While the action is unrelenting, the movie's length does test one's patience. Rated: 3/5 Dec 21, 2022 Full Review Kate Sánchez But Why Tho? Matthew D Hysterical humor alongside a riveting crime narrative and playfully endearing leads! Masterful director Timo Tjahjanto’s Indonesian action-comedy The Big 4 (2022) is delightfully silly and brutally vicious. I highly recommend watching The Big 4 streaming on Netflix. Timo Tjahjanto’s direction delivers ridiculous scenarios for his absurdist humor. I was constantly laughing. The darker crime narrative is neat with unbelievable violence for his signature ruthless action scenes. The bloody shootouts and pencak silat martial arts choreography are something special to behold. Timo Tjanjanto proves once again he’s Indonesia’s greatest action director in his string of martial arts hits The Night Comes for Us, The Big 4, and The Shadow Strays. Writers Johanna Wattimena and Timo Tjahjanto keep a whimsical tone despite the serious story of avenging the father figure Petrus. Their story of a grieving female detective investigating her beloved dad’s killers with the help of four crazy assassins raised as siblings by the very same father. It’s a pleasure to see the detective Dina’s harsh accusations and wild temper alongside these goofy hired killers with huge personalities. Casting director Meirina Alwie cast really fun actors that play well off each other. Abimana Aryasatya is cool and solemn as the brutal machine gun firing assassin leader Topan. His fierce martial arts look effortless. He’s swift in his movements and very proficient in the Indonesian martial arts pencak silat. He’s calm and collected, then panicked around his new crush Dina. He’s quite funny in the hotel sequence when he first meets Dina. Putri Marino is excellent and moving as the tough detective Dina, searching for her father’s killer. She’s very rough with the others, constantly kicking them in the balls, but she can burst with a fun comedic energy too. Lutesha is awesome, hysterical, and gorgeous as Alpha. Her rifle firing, machine gun spraying, and ruthless lady fighter Alpha is a scream. She is absolutely menacing and raving mad as Alpha. Her mermaid singing scene is a riot. I love her attitude and playful performance. Arie Kriting is hilarious as the amiable sniper Jenggo. Kristo Immanuel is always amusing as the goofy assassin Pelor. He was also great in The Shadow Strays. Budi Ros is wonderful as the stern assassin boss Petrus and the kindly father to Dina. Marthino Lio is creepy as the sinister knife wielding villain Antonio Sandoval. Michelle Tahalea is pretty and eerie as the fearsome secretary Alo. Michael Kho is fun as the sycophantic toadie Lengko and his furious brother Vinsen. Donny Damara is interesting as the policeman Hassan with his own connection to Dina’s father Petrus. Adjie Nur Ahmad is intriguing as the arms dealer pal Bunglon, who helps The Big 4. Editor Dinda Amanda’s fast cuts make the action enthralling and the jokes a blast to watch. Cinematographer Batara Goempar’s beautiful wide shots of the island beaches are lovely. I love seeing the martial arts and shootouts in smooth panning and tracking shots. The drone shot flying above the boat in the sea is something else. Art director Antonius Boedy leans into smoky plumes from gunshots and vast forests. Composers Aghi Narottama, Bemby Gusti, and Tony Merle provide really lively music. There’s a variety of island sounds, electronic parts, and ferocious symphonic elements. Sound designers Hiroyuki Ishizaka and Ichsan Rachmaditta record clear voices among the island noises and all the infighting yelling. Costume designer Victoria Anastasia crafts all these vibrantly colorful outfits and slick combat gear for the outfits. Makeup artist Ernaka Puspita Dewi does really pretty flowing hair on the actresses and cool wavy or spiked hair for the actors. In short, The Big 4 is a total blast and worth checking out on Netflix. It’s a brisk 141 minutes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review Timothy E I really enjoyed this action comedy movie. It'd be nice if they made a part two Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/24 Full Review Jennifer B Whether you watch it in its original dialect with subtitles or dubbed, this movie is nonstop. Big four is funny without being obnoxious. Gory enough to make you wonder how many vats of blood they needed. Well written with actors that are on point. If you are looking for a fun way to pass time. This movie is the way to go. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/24 Full Review Ghessehgoo Absolutely a worthless movie. Bad acting. Low budget that has been colored with extensive bloodshed trying to make it exiting with no luck Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/15/23 Full Review Jane D I hate movie with blood, but this movie is different! Of course with a lot of blood, but comedic as well. At least I can breathe and laugh at the same time closed my eyes 😅 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Started out really strong but 2h20m was way too long. Cutting it down to 90-100 minutes would have made for a fun action comedy. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
