Critics Consensus

The Big Lebowski's shaggy dog story won't satisfy everybody, but those who abide will be treated to a rambling succession of comic delights, with Jeff Bridges' laconic performance really tying the movie together.

Jonathan Romney Sight & Sound The Big Lebowski is at once utterly inconsequential and a blow for a cinematic slacker aesthetic. Rated: 5/5 Mar 23, 2023 Full Review Desson Thomson Washington Post With their inspired, absurdist taste for weird, peculiar Americana, the Coens have defined and mastered their own bizarre subgenre. No one does it like them and, it almost goes without saying, no one does it better. Jan 24, 2023 Full Review Mark Jackson Epoch Times Bridge's thespian mastery, via the slacker zeitgeist of our time, converts The Dude's funniest lines into a readily-understood language of everyday desperation. This ultimately begat the religion of Dudeism. Which makes 'Lebowski' an important movie. Alex K. IT WAS ABSOLUTELY AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE!!! THE THEATER WAS FULL OF PEOPLE!!! THE BEST COMEDY EVER!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/07/23 Full Review David M A classic and a must-watch at least once a year. First time seeing in a theatre! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/23/22 Full Review Creek “Strikes and gutters man” Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/28/25 Full Review Jack F Known for its offbeat nature, and rightfully understandable, the Big Lebowski is a movie you will like the more you see it. I know I'll see it again. I can understand the audience score. If you've seen it, and like it, then you're a cool person in my book. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/17/25 Full Review Ryan P The Big Lebowski is a comedic crime movie that was first screened in 1998. Ethan Coen and Joel Coen, happen to be brothers that wrote and directed the film together. Together, they created a movie filled with heart, character and good vibes. It includes two notable actors playing as the protagonist and deuteragonist, Jeff Bridges (plays The Dude) and John Goodman (plays Walter Sobchak). What’s even more of a fun surprise is how Sam Elliot plays the role of the stranger when he meets The Dude at the bar. Pre-production of the film couldn’t be any more perfect, but what about the rest of the movie? The plot isn’t intended to be taken too seriously, especially with how little moments add up to the reveal of who The Big Lebowski is. It’s slower paced than most would think and didn’t have a well-rounded resolve (although it was still slightly shocking). A notable preference for some viewers is to walk away from the film with something in depth to take away from it. Which is why I think most of the collages I reviewed this film with had mixed reactions. Other than its conclusion, its scenes were wonderfully well done with many chaotic and comedic moments. I like to think it pictures the chaotic lack of control in life through the perspective of a common slacker, which would be The Dude and doing your best to handle it. Never was there a character I forgot either, as everyone was rich with personality and fit drastically well into each scene for better or for worse for The Dude. The only scenes I often disliked from this film, would be the ones that involve Maude Lebowski. I feel like her role in the film made less sense from where the film was heading, like it doesn’t go with the flow and the chaos of what the other scenes are unfolding and was just around to provide dialogue. But there were a lot of characters in this film and I was bound to dislike at least one of them. Regardless, I think it’s more of a personal preference from me and doesn’t affect my final take on the film. If you haven’t watched The Big Lebowski yet, I highly recommend you do so. It’s a special one of a kind movie that is both humorous, realistic, and chaotic in many situations that would probably get you killed. However, if you are a movie goer that prefers to have a solid plot, then this film may not be for you. For those open minded folks, you will certainly have fun with this little roundabout adventure in Los Angeles. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/16/25 Full Review Brian K. Each scene is like a movie within a movie and there is not a better casted movie. Every time you watch it you catch something new. There are no rules.
