Critics Consensus

The Big Lebowski's shaggy dog story won't satisfy everybody, but those who abide will be treated to a rambling succession of comic delights, with Jeff Bridges' laconic performance really tying the movie together.

Jonathan Romney Sight & Sound The Big Lebowski is at once utterly inconsequential and a blow for a cinematic slacker aesthetic. Jun 8, 2023 Full Review Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting 25 years later, the movie where every detail matters and doesn’t matter at all, is as hilarious as ever – and more poignant, man. Rated: 5/5 Mar 23, 2023 Full Review Desson Thomson Washington Post With their inspired, absurdist taste for weird, peculiar Americana, the Coens have defined and mastered their own bizarre subgenre. No one does it like them and, it almost goes without saying, no one does it better. Jan 24, 2023 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) It’s just one of the most original films ever made, perhaps the best world the Coens imagined and the one filled with its best characters. Feb 22, 2024 Full Review Mark Jackson Epoch Times Bridge's thespian mastery, via the slacker zeitgeist of our time, converts The Dude's funniest lines into a readily-understood language of everyday desperation. This ultimately begat the religion of Dudeism. Which makes 'Lebowski' an important movie. Alex K. IT WAS ABSOLUTELY AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE!!! THE THEATER WAS FULL OF PEOPLE!!! THE BEST COMEDY EVER!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/07/23 Full Review David M A classic and a must-watch at least once a year. First time seeing in a theatre! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/23/22 Full Review Ndia W I actually love this movie. I felt it had so much going on at once. It had great comedic timing in my opinion and it was action packed which kept me entertained. The characters all had amazing personalities which keep you drawn in and make the movie more entertaining. I can see why they call this film a classic, I will most certainly watch this movie again. I found this to be the kind of film that teaches you a lesson and you wouldn’t even expect it too. It has a great soundtrack and I don’t have anything bad to say about it. It’s a 10/10 film that i would watch a million times more. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Jomo H I actually enjoyed this movie. The story was a little confusing, but it was all very entertaining. It was also very insightful and provided some interesting lessons. I want to talk about the characters. Almost everyone in the movie is angry. Especially Walter. He pulls out a gun in the bowling alley, screams about Vietnam for most of the movie, screams at a literal child, and destroys a neighbor’s car. This in turn results in The Dude’s car being destroyed by said neighbor. I noticed how much and how often Walter makes everything worse. He doesn’t listen to anyone, not even The Dude. It sort of makes it look like The Dude is the only level-headed character in this whole movie. I’ll never understand why Walter needs to prove that he’s always right. I think there’s a couple of messages The Big Lebowski is trying to tell us. The first is about anger. If a person doesn’t control their anger, they could end up hurting someone or themselves. Maybe it’s telling us that anger is a wasteful emotion that only causes problems. I think the movie is also trying to tell us to be patient with slower or dumber people. Everyone at some point during this movie is trying to extract information out of The Dude, but he is lost and confused for most of the investigation for Bunny. He is constantly being screamed at and he is the most peaceful, while trying to figure out what new location he’s been thrown into. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/14/24 Full Review Kevin A I’ve never heard of this movie before, or maybe I did so when I was younger but, I probably haven’t remembered the title name of the film at all. The Big Lebowski movie, which has a mixture of genres, mostly it being a following design focus of comedy, which I’ve seen plenty of times throughout the film. I definitely enjoyed the humor of this movie, since I feel like it’s right up my alley on these kinds of movies, in which I don’t think a lot of people would see this type of movie nowadays. I did ask friends of mine and their parents if they have seen this movie before, and some of them have seen the film when it released, and of course my friends saw it later on with them, which I thought that I wouldn’t be able to watch it my parents or just any kind of money at all, since sometimes it would be hard for me to watch some scenes with them or they wouldn’t understand it all, considering one of my parents only understand spanish, and don't understand english that well. Either way, I would still try to watch this movie with anyone that I know of, or even just a couple of friends of mine who like to watch these kinds of movies, like the hangover, or the movie “An American Pickle”. This movie itself is pretty dumb and stupid once you see how the characters act towards each other, like Jeff The Dude, or even Walter, which has shown many different and odd times throughout the film. Other than that, this movie isn’t as bad as people say it is. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Mason M Though an entertaining watch with a great soundtrack, The Big Lebowski is too scattered to be anything truly great.
