Newsweek Staff Newsweek Even the most avid admirers of the Stevenson classic will undoubtedly find the ponderous plot complicating the screen version, and Louis Hayward's pallid swashbuckling a bit disappointing. Dec 2, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Gordon Douglas directed this fun adaptation of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member A typical swashbuckler. A clean-cut morally decent knight returns home to find his noble father has been slain by his evil uncle and his father's lands siezed. Not only this, his uncle has also coerced 4 witnessess of the killing to collaborate into falsely accusing a 5th witness of the crime. This witness, Sir John Sedley, escapes to the forests (in a most implausible fashion), and there fronts a band of outlaws, Robin Hood style, from where he launches his campaign of revenge and restoration. A film that is throughout performed at a gallop. Quick bursts of dialogue, followed by quick bursts of action. Dialogue, Fight, dialogue, Fight. The standard Damsel-in-distress is there. Not bad by any means, just nothing outstanding. For the actors it's a good day at the office, and it's all done in the best of chivalrous taste. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member English medieval shenanigans American style. A bit of a romp but not a classic.
