Audience Member Fantastic time capsule. Must see! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/05/20 Full Review Audience Member Beautifully done. If you are wondering how the US is in the state in which it finds itself, this kind of perspective shows how fundamental the issue of race divide has been for a long long time (and this is just one time period snapshot). Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member (3.5/5) The most powerful moments in this film are when the subjects simply speak for themselves, in the time, of the time. Of particular impact for me was an interview with a young former prostitute and heroin addict who tells her story simply, sadly, and with a raw despair that shook me. The film itself, unfortunately, is often too scattershot or diffuse to make a similar mark. Nonetheless, it's a good primer for a history I haven't previously been privy to. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I found it terribly interesting that the Swedish team that took much of the historical footage of this film caused an international incident by highlighting race tensions in the U.S. which resulted in a recalling of ambassadors. A great overview and look at some of the less well known characters of the movement. Thoroughly enjoyable. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Without a doubt this movie will inform and move your heart, the best movie showing the era of collapse of leaders for the people and the rise of new ones.. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member This documentary has so much passion in it. I loved it! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Mark Sinker Sight & Sound By resisting the impulse to let present-day moralists tamp the story into safe hindsight shape... it allows us to glimpse rawer and more remarkable elements of mutual transformation in real time. Jul 6, 2018 Full Review Ina Diane Archer Film Comment Magazine Olsson includes material that might typically have been considered outtakes and lets clips play at length, reinforcing an impression of intimacy with the participants in the scene. Nov 5, 2013 Full Review Lisa Kennedy Denver Post Broken into nine chapters -- one for each year -- the documentary isn't a rigorous work but a felt piece of vital, if flawed, art. Rated: 3/4 Nov 4, 2011 Full Review Barbara Shulgasser Common Sense Media Docu about Black Power movement; language, violence. Rated: 3/5 Jul 14, 2020 Full Review David Lamble Bay Area Reporter With music by the Roots and Michael Jackson, this mind-expanding doc is an appropriate companion piece to Harvard Law School Professor Randall Kennedy's penetrating new volume, Racial Politics and the Obama Presidency. Jun 10, 2020 Full Review B. Ruby Rich Film Quarterly The result is astonishing, for stereotypes have long since replaced the vivid realities of that moment; now, revivified, its actors spin back into action, misconceptions corrected, history set straight.
