Where The Bohemian really shines is its treatment of music and opera scenes. The opera singers appearing in the film – including world-famous countertenor Philippe Jaroussky – imbue the words and music with full dramatic meaning.

The writer-director of the multi-award-winning 2015 documentary about Myslivecek (“Confession of the Vanished”), Vaclav was clearly the right man to make this film. His adoration of his subject is obvious but never in a sycophantic or fawning manner.

Visually and musically, it's gorgeous. But there's little plot holding the story together. It's more like a collection of vignettes with really poor segues in between. And all the characters came across as oddly flat, especially the titular composer. I felt no emotional connection to any of them.
