Critics Consensus

The Book of Life's gorgeous animation is a treat, but it's a pity that its story lacks the same level of craft and detail that its thrilling visuals provide.

Jake Wilson Sydney Morning Herald Though the plot gets a bit congested, the film remains far less predictable than most of its kind. Rated: 3/5 Apr 2, 2015 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) It's refreshingly sparky fare, boasting eye-catching design (wooden toys inspire CG magic), musical weirdness (Radiohead will never sound the same again) and proper laugh-out-loud jokes for young and old alike. Rated: 4/5 Oct 26, 2014 Full Review Mar Diestro-Dópido Sight & Sound Drawing on Mexican folklore and other Latin American traditions, Jorge R. Gutirrez's version of death in his beautiful, witty 3D-animated debut The Book of Life is bursting with vibrant colours and magic -- a constantly expanding, neverending party. Oct 24, 2014 Full Review Rolando Gallego EscribiendoCine The Book of Life fulfills its premise and contributes its specific uniqueness to the animated universe... [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 7/10 Dec 29, 2023 Full Review Cory Woodroof Williamson Home Page The Book of Life, like the best animated films, has its own tone, which helps it stand apart as its own thing. The music, a mix of original songs and fun takes on pop hits, is also worthy of praise. Feb 11, 2022 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz An unexpected delight for all ages. Natalie H This film is action filled and heartwarming. The most impressive part of the film is definitely its art style though. The movie uses bright colors that add life to the settings particularly the land of the remembered and it’s packed with all sorts of little details like the character Xibalba has so many skulls all over his design which make sense since he is death physical and spiritual .The cartoon proportions also work well the overall art style is very unique and really creates a nice atmosphere. I also really liked La Muerte's very bright and vibrant while still including skulls which makes sense since she represents the souls living on after death. The entire land of the remembered is very lively and spectacular. The designs of the character’s almost look like stop motion figures with the level of detail and the fact photo realism and proper proportions aren’t applied to the 3d models. This really works because the story is being told through the framing device of wooden figures and a storybook. They also added wooden details to the characters to make that clear. In terms of the story itself it’s not reinventing the wheel and does utilize some tropes but it’s enjoyable and exciting. The characters are fun and likable, the voice cast did a good job so it’s easy to get invested in the touching tale. The pacing could be improved, perhaps some parts are a little slow and it may have been nice to spend a bit more time in the underworld. The movie hands ideas and messages like generational change, self truth, perseverance, compassion, selfishness, honor, and courage. So it very much deals with human nature and imparts some messages to the audience and these messages work together pretty well though some are focused on more than others. So I would definitely recommend it for kids, it's engaging while still teaching important lessons. The film handles the idea of death very well and in a very interesting way touching on the idea of keeping loved ones' memories alive and honoring them while still writing your own story. The use of the kids at the museum throughout the story is a little random and doesn’t make complete sense but it isn’t too distracting. The use of cover music while the choice doesn’t make complete sense from a story perspective, the music works well with a mix of original songs. I remember watching this as a kid and thinking the songs were from the movie. This film is definitely worth a watch. It's visually very unique and the story is fun and enjoyable. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Igot p The ending felt to much like endgame, it dragged out after beating Chakal longer than Return of the kings, the movie as a whole has the same plot as coco, and the final fight gets hyped up longer then the departure of a Disney cruise the only redeeming quality is that I like everything previously stated The movie should have ended when Manolo got crushed by the bell, that would have shown that being a Sanchez isn't just fighting bulls, but being able to be selfless Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/18/24 Full Review Chris G I absolutely love this movie, it has a great story plot, and a great message of being your true self, and you can do almost anything Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/15/24 Full Review TROY S Overall, The Book of Life was an enjoyable movie that had amazing animation. A lot of its design choices and characters are insanely creative and just stunning. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/15/24 Full Review William B More fun than Coco. Somewhat underrated Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/11/24 Full Review matthias s *The Book of Life* gets 2.5 stars from me. The animation style just didn't work for me—too clunky and distracting. While the vivid colors are a visual treat, the story itself is just okay and a bit predictable. It reminds me of *Coco*, but *Coco* executes everything much better. The voice cast is excellent, bringing a lot of charm to their characters, but the movie feels generic even for a family film. I did enjoy the songs, but I wish they had gone for original tracks instead of relying on covers. It's not a bad watch, but it's easily forgettable and lacked the emotional depth or engagement I was hoping for. I wasn’t completely bored, but it didn’t pull me in either.
