OK, so the thing with these movies is... you have to rate them based on the impression they made on you the first time you saw them; not the impression they make on you when you watch them now.
Having said that, my first viewing of "Brain" was sometime in the early 1970s, watching a local NY TV show called "Creature Features"... basically, a sci-fi / horror film was shown every Saturday afternoon. And I was all of maybe 9 years old.
Down in my parent's windowless basement. All alone in that darkish basement, with just the glow from the 19" Black & White TV to keep me company. And the door to the utility room just a few feet away...
A guy (John Agar) walks into a dark cave. Creepy music starts to fade in. There's a distant light in the cave up ahead... music gets a bit more suspenseful, a bit louder... suddenly, you are face-to-face with a floating giant alien brain!!!
This movie absolutely scared the sh*t out of me as a 9 year old. I kept imagining that Gor (the evil Brain) was going to come after me out of the utility room... or my bedroom closet... or from outside my bedroom window at night. You get the picture. A kid's imagination (at least a kid back in the 1970s)...
A few year's back I found the DVD of this online. Watching it now, you notice all the 'flaws' that escaped that 9-year old kid. The strings holding up the Brain(s), and the aircraft that blows up... the plot holes (some as big as a house)... why would a brain have eyes inside of it, instead of attached by external optic nerves..? And why would a brain float around..? And why would the "good" Brain need to hide out in a dog to keep tabs on the "bad " Brain..?
You also notice some interesting 'side plots' that a 9-year old would probably miss. Like why is an alien Brain so absolutely horny for a human female? Oh, and that human female is actually pretty hot. And the absolute relish that John Agar takes in really hamming up his role... I really do think he enjoyed playing this part. I've heard that the creepy reflective aluminum contacts he wore to show when he was "possessed" by the bad Brain almost blinded him permanently.
Anyway, in summary, this movie really is "so bad it's good". I do need to add, that any enjoyability depends heavily on the age of the viewer. I tried showing this movie to my 9 year old grandson - and he thought it was "stupid, boring, and not scary at all!" (his words)... so, caveat emptor! But, all you boomers out there - I think you will enjoy this one.

Abysmally great. There's no other way to describe it. The end of the film could accurately be judged masterfully inept. A laugh riot, right up (down) there with Plan 9.

Movies have always been about making money, but some productions were also made for the sheer love of filmmaking. It's quite possible this movie falls into that catagory. This 1957 science fiction B-Film was aimed at a youthful audience, and has some of the worst special effects one's ever likely to encounter. Yet the story, despite a couple of hiccups, is solid, and the plot is greatly helped forward by the sincere performances of John Agar and Joyce Meadows. It also has a musical soundtrack a cut above other comparable movies. Additionally, it's a facinating window into the year 1957, from the cars, to the clothes, to the picture of President Eisenhower hanging on the wall. They say this film now has a "cult following," whatever the hell that actually means. For those of us raised on 1960's television, this is a happy stroll down memory lane. For those just interested in cheap thrills, this is a 1950's Grade B version of that. The filmmakers rushed the ending, but this movie is worth watching at least once just for the fun of it!

With some times crappy acting, dialogue and effects, The brain from planet Arous has developed a cult following and has because a sci-fi cult classic. I found it to be very entertaining and fun. It is understandable that with a small estimated 58,000 dollars they could not do much. Although it's story is a little ridiculous i still recommend this movie for entertainment and laughter.
