Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express Anurag Kashyap's best work is shot through with a strong political streak, and he weaves it into the plot with grit and a robust, raucous, bawdy wit. Rated: 3/5 Jun 25, 2019 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) The dialogue is robustly filthy, the violence unflinching and the music loaded with innuendo. Rated: 3/5 Jan 15, 2018 Full Review Mike McCahill Guardian It's the work of a creative ducking Bollywood's usual rules of engagement: a film to cheer and not to be messed with. Rated: 3/5 Jan 11, 2018 Full Review Anna M.M. Vetticad annavetticadgoes2themovies A Hindi film that is unafraid to say what it has to say in this present repressive atmosphere is rare. This is fearless, energetic filmmaking at its best. Rated: 4/5 Jan 11, 2021 Full Review Rahul Desai Film Companion Perspective is a powerful tool for viewers. And it can be appreciated that here is a film that changes according to how, and not why, we watch it. Rated: 3/5 Feb 28, 2019 Full Review Saibal Chatterjee NDTV Mukkabaaz, based on a true story, is a robust, raucous, rollicking ride through the muck of casteism, corruption and callousness. Audience Member Probably the best sports movie made in India. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Auteur Anurag Kashyap's "Mukkabaaz" could well have been titled "Multi-Tasker". Somewhat like but with far bigger challenges than the great Indian film heroes who have to not just act but also dance, sing and fight unlike their luckier Hollywood brethren who only have to do the first thing, The Boxer we see here doesn't just have to box at the top level but also accomplish the Herculean task of overcoming caste politics and wholesale skulduggery, do a day-time Railways job under the mercy of corrupt bosses who barely allow him to escape in the evenings for his boxing training, which again he has to curtail because home beckons but he is too tired to cuddle up to his wife whose hand he had to fight like a fiend to win. Forget a district-level medal, if any man or woman can wake up the next day to again go through the cycle of this insane circus, he or she deserves a million dollars in cash and a Lifetime Achievement Award.
