Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Outstanding example of a complex story told beautifully with an extraordinary gathering of polished old school acting gods. I highly recommend this film to a thinking audience. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member A really wonderful film - and very faithful to the Thornton Wilder novel that it adapts! I was a huge fan of the book, which has a well-earned reputation as a canonical classic. So I was very pleased to see that this film captures its spirit - asking complex questions about fate and the way we shape each other's lives, all against the backdrop of court politicking and exploring many spheres in 18th century Peru. Loved the performances from the stacked cast, especially Kathy Bates, who is heart-breaking and moving as Dona Maria. I also particularly enjoyed Robert De Niro, and Geraldine Chaplin was fantastic as the Abbess. The costuming was exquisite and I loved the film's sets/compositions. which were gorgeous and painterly. If you are a fan of epic historical narratives with compelling characters, beautiful costumes, period dramas, classical literature, or any of the great cast (also in this film: Gabriel Byrne and F. Murray Abraham and Harvey Keitel!), do yourself a favour and rent it this film! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Great cast. Really enjoyed this film.
