Audience Member this family-friendly anime version of a traditional Chinese opera is too funny... :) The birdies were hilarious! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member I liked the story of "The Butterfly Lovers",I mean the original one which is made in my mother's generation. But,this one,the animation is boring. The only good thing is they still follow the original story and added some funny scenes. While the bad thing is,I have no idea why they asked a female actor/singer to play the voice of Liang Sang Buo in chinese(the cantonese voice is play by a male actor)??I'm not sure whether they are trying to stick with the original since the male character is played by a female actor in the original version.Oh,one more thing, without Jacky Wu(Ma Wen Chai),I will only rate it half star. So,another half star for him.All I can say is,a failed adaption. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Bittersweet retelling of a classic chinese tale that I'd never been exposed to as a child, and hence this rendition (whatever its literary accuracy) worked for me -- with enough slapstick side characters alongside to keep it from being a complete tragedy. The music's pretty good too. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member The legend of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai is one of my all time favorite Mandarin operas from Shaw Brothers in the 1960's. However, if Communist China animators want to invade our FREE West, they better rethink about hiring better translators, voice actors, and an actual scriptwriter. The animation was pedestrian at most. Wow, how can one ruin this famous national parable about a centuries old feminist female cross-dressers? The movie's too cute to be enjoyable next time around! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member A nice adaptation for children of the most famous love tale of China. Sad but well-done.
