Even with a great cast and respected director, the slow and dreary Card Counter adds up to a disappointing letdown.

The Movie Critic If you want a slow, dreary, film with uninspired acting well we couldnt tell you how it finished. This review describes the film. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/07/21 Full Review First L if i could give it 0 i would. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/21 Full Review Michael E Started out intriguing but slowed down and got boring fast. It's no Cincinnati Kid. If the main character has to explain what he's doing, who cares. Isaac, who I like, is pretty emotionless - maybe the card counting carries over to his character and makes him borderline dull. Haddish is wasted in an underwritten role. The "ending" derails and both makes little sense and involves things Isaac should've seen coming a mile away simultaneously. Schrader's a bad director and hasn't written a good script since "Taxi Driver". Without Scorsese as an Executive producer, I doubt this even gets made. It probably shouldn't have. Save your money. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/29/21 Full Review Kyle Kubiak Terrible. Waste of time Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/29/21 Full Review Ricardo Great acting good photography and music. Plot is at times intense and interesting others it loses tension and it becomes rush and confusing Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/29/21 Full Review biscuitbailey Intense. Great acting. Heavy story pacing intentionally slow. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/27/21 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald Isaac gives a finely judged performance. His Tell is a tightly controlled but outwardly affable character who behaves as if he's given up all ambition beyond the desire to stay out of trouble. Rated: 3.5/5 Nov 30, 2021 Full Review Esther Zuckerman Thrillist The Card Counter is an uncomfortable, meditative movie about guilt, risk, retribution, and the way America operates. It's also an extraordinary example of Oscar Isaac's power. Nov 23, 2021 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) The film has a broodingly commanding central performance. It's a pity, then, that much of its promise is squandered by sloppiness, both in the writing and elsewhere. Rated: 3/5 Nov 7, 2021 Full Review Ryan McQuade InSession Film The Card Counter is a misstep that makes you want to just fold in your hand and leave the table for good. Rated: D Apr 4, 2024 Full Review Ben Bradley Starburst Paul Schrader’s unique style is evident in “The Card Counter,” a film that can be seen as part of Paul Schrader’s lengthy inquiry into complex characters and their inner struggles. Jan 31, 2024 Full Review Serena Seghedoni Loud and Clear Reviews Forgiveness, guilt, revenge and redemption are some of the many themes approached by a slow-burning thriller that will have your full attention from start to end.
