Critics Consensus

The Carpenter's Son is peculiar enough to hold some cult appeal, but for all the promise this biblical horror's conception holds, its execution proves far from immaculate.

This is not the messiah. Nor is it a very naughty boy. There was an opportunity for a truly original spin on the so-called Greatest Story Ever Told here, but The Carpenter’s Son pulls its punches to make a rather rote horror that amounts to little. Go to Full Review

Cage is a poor casting decision: he’s distractingly frantic as Joseph. And Nathan overuses histrionic sound design to disguise the fact that the film is not as creepy or frightening as it wants to be. Go to Full Review

Cage is the obvious problem, so conspicuously miscast that only, say, La Voix from Strictly or a Pekingese on tranquillisers might have delivered a more egregious characterisation. Go to Full Review

A horror movie based on one of the apocryphal gospels is an intriguing idea, but this crushingly serious slog has all the energy of a dry sermon delivered in monotone by a robot. Go to Full Review

An intriguing but frustrating biblical horror that never commits. Strong ideas and a solid Noah Jupe performance can’t save a tonally confused film where Nicolas Cage feels miscast and ambition collapses into a muddled, forgettable experience. Go to Full Review

You’ll want to grab The Carpenter’s Son by its lapels and tell it to just go for broke, leap off the rails, piss people off, rub the cat the wrong way, cant an angle, throw in a car chase, something, anything please, but it never does. Go to Full Review
