Critics Consensus

Although it doesn't tumble to The Cellar of the haunted house genre, this is a mostly musty exercise in second-rate supernatural horror.

Richard Newby AV Club What made the short film so effective—the universality of a concept that reaches back to our primitive fears of the dark—Muldowney trades for a baggy foray into paranormal activity bookended by two strong short films. Rated: C- Apr 18, 2022 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times “The Cellar” really works best as a metaphor about parents who can only watch from a distance as their children get consumed by the adult world’s savage cynicism. Apr 17, 2022 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com The most immediate problem with The Cellar is that everybody but Cuthbert seems to have made this movie on autopilot. Rated: 2/4 Apr 15, 2022 Full Review Pramit Chatterjee Digital Mafia Talkies If you are easily scared and want to dip your toes into the horror genre, The Cellar is probably a good place to start. If you are somewhat of an expert at watching horror-based IPs, maybe give this a pass and seek out better films. Rated: 1/5 Jul 20, 2023 Full Review Paula Vázquez Prieto La Nación (Argentina) Bares all the gothic offerings austerely: tension between science and the occult; darkness as a representation of Evil; space as an architectural likeness of those who inhabit it. Well-known iconography, but in the end, it works. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3/5 Oct 13, 2022 Full Review Adrián Monserrat EscribiendoCine Unoriginal but tense, this is a horror story that manages to be both traditional and immersive. However, when you lift the veil, it's empty and it lacks potency. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 5/10 Oct 10, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Raquel Z I was pleasantly surprised when watching this film on Tubi. I don't believe I've seen a truly decent film since the year 2010. In a way, it has a Hitchcockian format. He would introduce the characters and they would seem to be good, average people. In this movie, the characters appear that way. Then, the drama begins. All of the dirty laundry comes out and the person whom you thought was the most decent, suddenly removes the mask. They are all polite; and that's the point. Just because someone appears to be nice and polite, does not make it so. At that point, I thought it would evolve into a crime thriller, but it didn't. I would call this more of a mystery thriller, not supernatural. Great movie! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/29/25 Full Review Zoey R The Cellar was extremely interesting, The beginning middle & end came together perfectly, it wasn't scary but the movie psychologically keeps you guessing & the ending is extremely cool, definitely should watch Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/18/25 Full Review ANONYMOUS S En lo personal esta pelicula me parecio muy buena, no entiendo como a la mayoria no les gusto, quizas no entendieron las referencias Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/21/24 Full Review Anna K There is no horror without characters to horrify. What passes as characters in this movie are not just cardboard cutouts, but cutouts half-heartedly animated by the ghosts of actors who wish they had a better film to haunt. And who can scare a ghost? Well, not this movie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/19/24 Full Review Bunny K I personally loved the movie. Great actors and actress! The mom did everything in power to find her daughter, the dad did his best to help, however it does show that sometimes parents don't know there kids and that can be bad. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Jessica E This got outright laughable the last 20-30 minutes. There’s some good ideas in there somewhere but the execution is poor. Elisha Cuthbert elevates this “film” a bit and she does a good job with what she was given but that’s the best that can be said about this movie.
