      Critics Consensus

Although it doesn't tumble to The Cellar of the haunted house genre, this is a mostly musty exercise in second-rate supernatural horror.

Dan R Shudder's investment back into the industry in recent years has meant the production of many new horror films. One of which is 2022's 'The Cellar'. SYNOPSIS: 'Keira Woods' daughter mysteriously vanishes in the cellar of their new house. She soon discovers there is an ancient and powerful entity controlling their home that she will have to face or risk losing her family's souls forever.' This film does feel like 'horror for beginners' and has the basic jump scares you'd expect from a middling film of the genre. For myself though, it felt a bit like Groundhog Day. We've been here before and we've seen all the tricks time and time again. However, ignoring all of that, this isn't a bad film at all and it's nice to see Elisa Cuthbert back on our screens. She's no longer the disobedient teen from '24' so it feels a bit odd seeing her play a mother here. Especially to a teenager. She does a decent job with the film as a whole and maybe she's found a genre she's great at working within. More please. In regards to the story itself, well once we know it's some sort of alchemical math bringing a demon into play then all bets are off. Things pick up and get a bit crazy. Chuck a bit of true mythos in there and I'm all in. Although 'The Cellar' feels like we're treading old ground this is a compelling horror film which delivers an ending of despair and dread. 7/10 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/24/24 Full Review Peter w It went nowhere.no explanation of how you get in or out Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/11/24 Full Review D E No, save your time, just dumb. A major slow burn that lead to a disappointment. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/14/24 Full Review Ken B Another haunted house picture with all the usual symbols and equations to figure out that go along with it. Then there's the miserable teenage girl who hates mother. Bad acting. Zero chemistry between the characters, and predictable as could be! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/09/23 Full Review Katya V This started out very boring, I had to fast-forward a little, cause the trope of sullen-teenager-hates-parents-especially-mom-for-making-her-move-to-a-big-creepy-house is so, so tired. And the maths made things worse cause for me maths is infinitely scarier than horror movies. What I appreciate about this film is the ending. Namely, the tone of the ending. I respect films that go with this kind of an ending. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/10/23 Full Review Victoria T Couldn't finish watching it, too boring. Richard Newby AV Club What made the short film so effective—the universality of a concept that reaches back to our primitive fears of the dark—Muldowney trades for a baggy foray into paranormal activity bookended by two strong short films. Rated: C- Apr 18, 2022 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times “The Cellar” really works best as a metaphor about parents who can only watch from a distance as their children get consumed by the adult world’s savage cynicism. Apr 17, 2022 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com The most immediate problem with The Cellar is that everybody but Cuthbert seems to have made this movie on autopilot. Rated: 2/4 Apr 15, 2022 Full Review Pramit Chatterjee Digital Mafia Talkies If you are easily scared and want to dip your toes into the horror genre, The Cellar is probably a good place to start. If you are somewhat of an expert at watching horror-based IPs, maybe give this a pass and seek out better films. Rated: 1/5 Jul 20, 2023 Full Review Paula Vázquez Prieto La Nación (Argentina) Bares all the gothic offerings austerely: tension between science and the occult; darkness as a representation of Evil; space as an architectural likeness of those who inhabit it. Well-known iconography, but in the end, it works. However, when you lift the veil, it's empty and it lacks potency. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 5/10 Oct 10, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
