What to Know

Critics Consensus

There's a certain amount of fun to be had from watching Bateman and Reynolds play against type, but it isn't enough to carry The Change-Up through its crude humor and formulaic plot.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Although the lack of originality of the concept really brings down its appeal, audiences will enjoy watching this recycled story unfold with the two newest performances. Ayan S I've always loved this movie. It's not some sort of spectacularly shot masterpiece, but fantastic performances from the whole cast and some hilarious scenes make it worth it. I end up watching it like once a year it's one of those movies that feels like home to me. I don't understand so many negative reviews. People are so stuck up these days... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/22/25 Full Review Kay A Comedy was okay, kinda been there done that. Definitely not worth the time watching. The reason for my low rating is the first scene of the movie there is for no reason a shot of two babies genitals. Why or how that is acceptable is beyond me and for that reason I cannot recommend this movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/16/25 Full Review Wayne D The Change-Up, starring Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds, sets out with a familiar but always promising premise — two very different people magically swapping lives. We've seen this blueprint before in movies like The Parent Trap, Face/Off, and Trading Places, and while the idea is still genius in its simplicity, this version struggles to keep it fresh. Bateman and Reynolds are both naturally funny and deliver some great moments early on. Their chemistry and timing definitely help keep the first half of the movie moving at a decent pace. But somewhere around the midway point, the concept starts to feel tired. The jokes become more predictable, the emotional beats feel forced, and the story loses the energy it started with. While it’s far from a disaster and certainly has its entertaining moments, The Change-Up ultimately feels like a comedy that leans too heavily on a recycled idea without doing quite enough to make it feel new again. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/28/25 Full Review Madam D This is a fun flick, with 2 of my favorite actors. Despite being able to guess what was going to happen, all the good acting from the entire cast kept me engaged. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/20/25 Full Review Audience Member Garbage film with filthy disgusting jokes and poor characters. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/18/25 Full Review Samuel W A spin on the body switching genre of movies, introducing Jason Bateman as a business, family man and Ryan Reynolds as a sexually-charged heathen of little motivation. When they switch, that's when the fun begins. If the fun is boring situations of little acting on both stars’ part. While they boast funny voices as always, as their specialty, they did little to improve how different they are from each other. Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds, after a body swap, felt like…Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds, with only minor differences in character. The movie was entertaining at times, and I love the leads, but everyone else sort of fell short and there was a bunch of unnecessary nudity throughout the film which seemed to be a shock factor because of Ryan Reynolds’ original character. The movie was fine, nothing extraordinary, and not unwatchable. But it was very much of a slug to get through. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/01/25 Full Review Read all reviews
