In the small Algerian village of El Kalaa, where the traditional practice of men marrying multiple women is still observed, simple-minded Kaddour (Khaled Barkat) is infatuated with one of the town cobbler's wives. Following the instructions of a soothsayer, Kaddour cuts off a lock of her hair to cast a spell to win her, which angers the villagers. To keep the peace, Kaddour's adoptive father, Sidi (Djillali Ain-Tedeles), agrees to either find a bride for his son or divorce his four spouses.
