Jesús and Maria love each other, endlessly, magnificently, even though they sometimes just don't notice. But hey, now that their little lump of love is born, everything's going to work out. Sure, Maria still has a bit of a North-Korean streak in handling the household, calling all the shots when it comes to the color of their apartment walls, the name of the baby, the food they eat, the TV shows they watch, the thickness of the toilet paper and their holiday destination. Jesús, to prove to her and himself he ain't some spineless trilobite but that he has a will of his own, gets to pick the coffee table. Halleluiah! A hard-won victory that he's cherishing by picking out the most aggressively ugly little thing imaginable, the furniture equivalent of Liberace getting lost in Ikea. An unbreakable wonder, says the salesman. Overpriced, says Maria. It will bring boundless happiness to their lives, says the salesman. Their worst nightmare, says us....

Phil Hoad Guardian Casas has an undeniable nose for middle-class peccadilloes, but tone is everything. Rated: 2/5 May 13, 2024 Full Review Sarah Vincent Sarah G Vincent Views The filmmakers have conceived a bleak, emotionally violent film, but other than a lot of blood, it is not actually graphic. It will feel graphic, and you may wind up with a headache afterwards. Cayas is wise to let us use our imagination. Rated: 4.5/5 May 23, 2024 Full Review Douglas Davidson Elements of Madness ... doesn’t incorporate the supernatural, myths or legends, or otherwise twist the logic of reality to conjure tension or terror, but uses interpersonal tension and human horror to upend audiences from uncomfortable start to disquieting end. Garry A After the accident, this film is all about the slow building tension that leads up to the somewhat expected conclusion. Watching the main protagonist delay the inevitable is an uneasy experience. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/05/25 Full Review Glenn B This movie stunk. 100% stunk. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/05/25 Full Review PVD H Years ago I went down a rabbit hole looking for the most brutal film I could find to see if I could tolerate it. It’s too bad at the time The Coffee Table had not been made yet. While it’s not filled with the gore of the films I was watching at that time, it’s simple but horrific plot line is so disturbing that it leaves you feeling depleted. There’s elements to this film that help the viewer from having a full blown major depressive episode upon enduring, such as some small comedic elements such as the sleazy table salesman, the 13-year old admirer in the apartment building, and some of the dynamics between characters, but when the “event” that changes everything hits, even if you saw it coming it is hard to deny the intensity of that moment. The acting and cinematography of this film were on point and I overall give the filmmakers and actors a lot of credit, this is a gutsy film to make and they pulled it off in a way that, this feels bizarre to say considering the content it’s about, was highly entertaining. - Dave of PVD Horror Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/29/25 Full Review J K Moral of the movie: Listen to your wife. I have been scared of what could happen if you combine glass coffee tables and kids but this is a whole new level. New fear unlocked. I rewound 70% of the movie. The score is due to my 60 minutes long anxiety attack. Would not recommend this to anyone, especially new, first time parents. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/22/25 Full Review BigD J There is absolutely nothing comedic about this film and I can appreciate the darkest of humor… or at least recognize it as such. It’s not even really horror, but very horrific. More of an intense drama and boy, this one is INTENSE. Worth a watch Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/19/25 Full Review Hillary C This movie was perfect, in my opinion. Tragic and so wonderfully acted. I would not consider this a comedy, but it does have some very dark comedic moments, that somehow blend perfectly with the bleak subject matter. It is a harrowing experience and so worth the watch. I rarely ever write reviews, and though it might not be to everyone's taste, I believe any fan of thoughtful horror movies will appreciate this hidden gem.
