Alain E An impressive accomplishment. A dark movie with a relatively positive conclusion. A young woman grows up in Netherlands in the 19th century. Leads a carefree life as member of the upper middle class. Accepts a wedding proposal from a man of equal stature. The marriage is unsatisfactory because it is not consummated. Her husband reveals that he used to have relationships with men which he has stopped without apparently developing a sexual attraction to women. She finds in her circle a lover who is a classical pianist. She follows him to England. She gets pregnant and her behavior becomes progressively erratic, so her partner abandons her and she gives birth alone to a moribund little girl. Having become more and more delusional possibly from post partum psychosis, puts the body of her baby in a hand bag and boards a train with the intention of returning to he Netherlands. She requires hospitalization and then she is prescribed morphine and she develops an opiate addiction. She makes it to France where she needs to be hospitalized again. Finally makes it back to Netherlands lucid and she gets employment as agricultural worker. This story could easily end as a melodrama with exaggerated acing. The director exercises firm control and the situations are very realistic. Good use of a little over of two hours. The acting is outstanding. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/09/24 Full Review Read all reviews
