Pat Mullen POV Magazine This moving doc if conventionally unfussy doc proves that there’s much to learn from Roberts about how to treat both the animals and the humans with which we share the Earth. Jan 11, 2025 Full Review Joe Friar Fort Worth Report One feels that fate played a role in Roberts’ extraordinary life, reinforced by Andrea Nevins’s wonderful documentary. Rated: 4/4 Oct 19, 2024 Full Review Lael Loewenstein FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) A tender, sweet and endearing story. Sep 17, 2024 Full Review Charles Johnston Spectrum Culture A stirring portrait of the 32-year friendship between a sensitive horse trainer from California and the queen of England as they bond over horses and change each other’s lives. Sep 11, 2024 Full Review Christopher Campbell Nonfics There’s nothing necessarily powerful or essential about this film or its narrative, but Roberts and the documentary are something to be admired and cherished. Sep 7, 2024 Full Review Emily DuGranrut In Review Online [The film] thrives by virtue of its authenticity, sincerity, and the undeniable chemistry of its two central figures, but it also gives viewers more than a mere tale of unlikely friendship. Mark M In an era with so much negativity, the story of triumph over violence is so uplifting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/25 Full Review Susie H As a horse owner, this documentary was enlightening, entertaining and inspiring. I was literally brought to tears several times. Cannot recommend enough how wonderful it was. I thought I knew about Monty Roberts and his training methods, which are superb, but the story of his life and his friendship with Queen Elizabeth, as well as his work with Veterans suffering from PTSD, was new information for me. Monty has lived a tough but amazing life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/25 Full Review Arya S This is a must see, fantastic documentary, so beautifully told, about Monty Roberts and his non-violent methods of training horses, so revolutionary when seen within conventional brutality of horse training, But it is also so much more than that, with deep insights into both human and animal nature, as Monty's later work with PTST sufferers exemplifies. There are breathtaking moments of beauty as Monty works and bonds with horses -- efforts that capture the attention of a likeminded and compassionate Queen Elizabeth. "On our own, we cannot end wars or wipe out injustice, but the cumulative impact of thousands of small acts of goodness can be bigger than we imagine." Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/25 Full Review Mary H I taught English for a short time in a juvenile prison. Teenagers, especially when they've made bad decisions, are like wild horses. The best way to reach them both is to pay attention and to be respectful. This film can teach us a lot about connecting with each other. I grieve at the sight of traditional horse - "breaking" methods, and I celebrate Monty Roberts's way of training horses and helping soldiers and first responders find a way back from trauma. Monty's background as an abused child informs him deeply. Bravo. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Audience Member A moving and thoughtful film that shows the folly of the traditional method of training horses by "breaking" them, the wisdom of a man brought up to be a cowboy, and the unexpected compassion of Queen Elizabeth II. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/23/24 Full Review Clayton C What a surprising movie! This thing should win an Oscar. I wasn't familiar with Monty Roberts until a friend told me about the film, but boy am I happy it came to our local theater. This is a must watch for everybody... especially documentary fans.
