Critics Consensus

Although director Zoe Lister-Jones has forged a new path for the weirdos of today, The Craft: Legacy's spells may only enchant fans of the original.

Adam Graham Detroit News What doesn't work in 90-odd minutes would fare better laid bare in an eight-episode series. Gee, where's that spell when you need it? Rated: C+ Nov 2, 2020 Full Review Peter Travers ABC News Though this horror sequel about a coven of teen witches wastes time on delivering shocks instead of developing character, the feminist fire of filmmaker Zoe Lister-Jones sees to it that there's more here than a Halloween throwaway. Oct 30, 2020 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com There's magic being performed by this quartet of young witches. Rated: 3/4 Oct 30, 2020 Full Review Emmet Asher-Perrin Reactor The Craft: Legacy never quite lives up to its promise. It’s distressing because there is a lot of charm between its frames, working hard to wriggle its way out and steal a little sun. Jul 28, 2025 Full Review Travis Johnson Mr. Movie's Film Blog We could have had a new, updated, femme-fantasy future cult classic. Instead, we have this forgettable mess. Aug 8, 2021 Full Review Rhian Daly NME (New Musical Express) The original film relied heavily on special effects, but The Craft: Legacy eschews visual gimmickry for character development. Sebastian D A Witchy Sequel Flop. The Craft: Legacy is a disappointing sequel that squanders its witchy revival with clichéd teen drama and a shallow script that prioritizes aesthetics over substance, turning potential empowerment horror into vapid fluff. Cailee Spaeny’s Lily teases vulnerability, but the coven—Virginia Gardner, Lovie Simone, Zoey Luna—comes off as interchangeable archetypes, their arcs diluted by predictable revenge and romance tropes. Michelle Monaghan’s enigmatic teacher hints at menace, but the narrative meanders without the original’s edgy bite. The 2020s push for inclusive YA horror feels forced, with glossy visuals masking a story that repeats 1996 beats without evolving. What could have been a fresh take on witchcraft and trauma devolves into forgettable scares and underdeveloped themes, a middling misfire that wastes its diverse cast and fails to cast a spell. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/09/25 Full Review Danny K. Oof… The Craft is a classic. This one, just no. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/06/25 Full Review Audience Member I was excited to watch the movie, but that quickly turned to dissapointment. The characters were not compelling and the entire movie felt too much like it was trying too hard to be like the first, but it doesn't even come close to it Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/20/25 Full Review Keisha R This has to be the worst sequel of all time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/08/25 Full Review Matty D I wanted to like this film, but it made it difficult to. The Craft: Legacy plays like the spark notes of the greatest hits from the 90’s original, building very little tension and failing to have fun along the way. While the cast is good in their roles, clearly giving it their all, they are failed by a script that refuses to create any compelling characters. Whereas the original film built interesting and empathetic backstories for each of the four girls, this Legacy sequel doesn’t seem to care or want to. This is supposed to be a film about sisterhood, but three of the four main girls aren’t given any sense of character development. Then, there’s the third act twist, which seems to be tailored for a different film (like a sequel to The Stepfather). As a horror movie, it doesn’t work—it lacks suspense and genuine scares. In the end, The Craft: Legacy is simply a silly movie and best viewed as a case study in how to create a middle-of-the-road sequel that—thankfully—doesn’t tarnish the cult classic reputation of the original. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/03/25 Full Review Pedro Henrique C The Craft: Legacy (2020) is a terrible sequel, the film tries to reuse the same scenes from the first film but this time in modern day versions. The story is very bad, the cast can't connect and the villain is a joke. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/17/25 Full Review Read all reviews
