Having just relocated to a comfortable new home in suburbia, the Kobayashi family -- Katsuhiko (Katsuya Kobayashi) ; his wife, Saeko (Mitsuko Baishô) ; and their two children, Masaki (Yoshiki Arizono) and Erika (Yûki Kudô) -- appear to be the picture of middle-class success. But the family's comfortable bourgeois veneer begins disintegrating when white ants infest their home, eating away at the woodwork. As the Kobayashis' house begins to crumble, so does the sanity of its inhabitants.

Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse Sogo Ishii takes the term dysfunctional family and transforms it into something much worse, as paranoia is the permeating status of each member. In this fashion, however, he mocks the standards of modern Japanese society, in a quite evident metaphor. Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member One of the weirdest comedies around, but had to get the DVD from Germany (German subtitles only) because the movie doesn't appear to exist in England. But if you either understand Japanese or can read German, you don't want to miss this. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member superb film, which seems to have been unjustly forgotten in the contemporary market for Japanese cinema (i.e it is neither so-called 'J Horror' nor a gratuitously eccentric teen flick). the family's descent into madness (from squeaky clean suburban normality) is paced brilliantly, and the lunacy - when it comes - is satisfactorily extreme and hilarious. one of the great Japanese comedies of recent decades Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Yes. This movie was awesome. Kind of like an easier to watch Visitor Q. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Sogo Ishiis DIE FAMILIE MIT DEM UMGEKEHRTEN DÃSENANTRIEB, nun auch endlich mal gesehen. Beeindruckt gewesen von der völlig ungezà 1/4gelten Aggression des durch und durch destruktiven Filmes, dessen Brutalität zwar ins Absurde gesteigert, aber letztlich gar nicht einmal komödiantisch abgefedert wird. GYAKUFUNSHA KAZOKU à 1/4berhaupt als Komödie zu etikettieren, verschafft mir einige Bauchschmerzen - eher ein erbarmungslos wà 1/4tender Vorläufer fà 1/4r Miikes viel späteren VISITOR Q. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member I can't believe that this is actually on Flixster! Excellent and oh so hilar...if you dig Miike's comedic stuff, you should definitely put this on your Xmas list. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member A weird movie... Quite funny most of the time but soon you realize that this family has very special problems... The father is obsessed with white ants under the house, the daughter wants to become a singer or a wrestler whatever comes first, the son is getting crazy from studying and the grandpa falls back to be a soldier in ww2 again... and everyone thinks the others are crazy. Then comes the day when they start trying to kill each other to save them from their "sickness". This movie may be weird, but it is also very good. It will leave you thinking...
