J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Clment conjures up some good suspense sequences as the doctor hatches a plan to escape in an inflatable dinghy, though what really powers the story is the director's icy contempt for his ship of fools. May 5, 2016 Full Review Keith Phipps The Dissolve What makes the film is the atmosphere of claustrophobia and dread that Clment creates. Nov 18, 2023 Full Review Virginia Graham The Spectator The characters are well drawn, notably M. Paul Bernard as the collaborationist, and there is a magnificent bit of acting by Dalio, which is well worth a hearing. laurent b One of the greatest war movies I've ever seen. Suspense, characters, plot, and a in-depth reflection on the human condition. Absolute Must see !!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review paul d This is a clever story and a remarkable movie. How did René Clément manage to get, in 1946, only a year after the war, access to U-boats and a multinational crew for all the time it took to make this film? It is very realistic. It's all here: a mysterious voyage, odd civilian passengers, the natural claustrophobia of a submarine, treachery, villains, victims, love, duty, and of course evil Nazis and normal Germans fighting the war. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A gauche but functional WWII tale elevated by the collective works of a talented ensemble cast. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Claustrophobic French melodrama; tautly written and well-acted. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Les Maudits (1947) This post-war french movie is very interesting, especially seeing German characters speaking french (no doubt with a German accent). I never saw René Clément's movie, "Is Paris Burning?" (1966) but this movie makes me want to see it. This one is about a bunch of Nazis and Nazi sympathizers, towards the end of the war, getting on board a U-Boat bound for South America. One of the passengers gets hurt during a depth charge attack, so they sneak into France and kidnap a doctor. The doctor knows that he's dead meat as soon as they reach their destination and tries to do anything he can to survive including making friends with who he can. We also get a glimpse of some people who were staunch supporters of the wrong side for whatever reasons crammed inside the claustrophobic confines of this submarine. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member What makes the film is the atmosphere of claustrophobia and dread that Clément creates.
