Andrea Thompson Chicago Reader Plenty of filmmakers try to subvert standard horror tropes, but Justin P. Lange, the writer-director making his feature debut with The Dark, actually does a good job of it. Jan 26, 2019 Full Review Teo Bugbee New York Times This is weighty material for a slim film, and the direction by Justin P. Lange is heavy-handed. Mina and Alex seem less like teenagers and more like case studies with traumas rather than personalities. Oct 26, 2018 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times When "The Dark" clicks (which is often), it's a moving and poetic tale about how neglect and abuse can turn people into freaky beasts, and how love can bring them back. Oct 26, 2018 Full Review Norman Gidney HorrorBuzz The Dark is a horror movie that faces the real horrors of abuse that too many are familiar with. It is slow at times, demanding a little patience from the viewer, but it is worth it. Aug 31, 2022 Full Review Jason Adams The Film Experience The film remains genuinely devoted to unraveling their cycles of abuse even amid all of the axe murder Jul 14, 2021 Full Review Alix Turner Ready Steady Cut Two badly abused teenagers make friends, and help each other look past the traumas that brought them there. One of them is unable to see, and the other may well be dead. Rated: 3/5 Feb 2, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

l r It captured the essence of loneliness and trauma really well. The bond between the two main characters is very well portrayed and forms naturally but the back stories and what is left to the imagination is well done. All in all a good movie and worth a watch Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/13/24 Full Review Audience Member This movie surprises on many fronts. From the subtle acting of the talented young leads, to the deft use of memory and drama to flesh out the violence and gore in the haunted woods. Justin P. Lange has directed a horror film that takes on a mantle of complex emotion which few others can boast. It's well worth the watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/04/24 Full Review Cher R Although this movie had an interesting premise, I felt like the characters were not fleshed out enough. It worked well as an allegory for the pain victims of abuse can sometimes inflict on others and how they can recover but the main characters didn’t seem to have much personality other than their trauma so it was difficult to connect with them. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/24/24 Full Review Pondue R A horror movie? It is and it is not. There is plenty of gore and violence but the monster is not all that. Of course, the human side of monsters in horror films goes back to at least Lon Cheney but here Mina is merely striking back at her abusive, depraved world. Sound familiar? Even so, the director manages to bring new twists and turns, some surprisingly genuine, and the film becomes far less about who buys it and more about two lost teenagers who would rather not be found. The Dark is worth watching. The ending will keep the conversation going well after la fin. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review Sheree B Incredibly good acting... a movie about the effects of abuse and the healing power of healthy connections. Alex's literal blindness is metaphor for victims who believe the gaslighting of the perpetrators. Victims can be blinded by the lies and manipulations of abusers and remain with them even when, to others, the need to run is clear. We call this 'fawning' to survive. Mina, on the other hand, turns into a human-hating, hard-hearted zombie who lives in isolation and kills anyone she meets. She is in 'flight and fight' to survive. Metaphor for victims who, due to the abuse, end up with no idea how to have healthy relationships and trust no one, carrying the heavy burden of hate around in their hearts covering over the deeply crippling pain. Two very different survival techniques born out of abuse and manifested in different attachment styles. And then this movie beautifully shows the healing power of healthy and loving connections. Mina literally heals as she opens her heart up to another and learns to trust again. And Alex realises the lies of his abuser and is able to go back to his family. This is one powerful film on the devestation of childhood trauma, and the beauty of the power of human healing. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/25/24 Full Review zoe s Unexpected and Haunting.
