      The Day After

      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The Day After may rank among the slighter works in writer-director Hong Sang-soo's filmography, yet it still presents an absorbingly earnest look at relationships in turmoil.

Ben Sachs Chicago Reader A prodigious director of actors, [Hong Sang-soo] maintains a sense of spontaneity that renders the characters' behavior natural and relatable. Apr 13, 2020 Full Review Namrata Joshi The Hindu The film does bring on a few laughs but doesn't make one engage with the situation and the characters. Jul 12, 2018 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times Amusingly bittersweet yet quietly resplendent... May 17, 2018 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Although The Day After seems a bit too trivial to compare to some of Sangsoo's more substantial titles, this melancholy faced comedy should amuse the director's fan base. Rated: 3/5 Oct 10, 2019 Full Review Mattie Lucas From the Front Row A kind of filmed therapy that offers a unique window into the soul of an artist. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 3, 2019 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis HanCinema Hong Sang-soo directs another minimalistic film, which focuses on witty dialogue to get his comments through, and occasionally functions as a stage play, particularly due to the long takes of people simply talking Mar 7, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member This is Korean's version of a timeloop story. A good mystery but it lacks the thrill compared to other film of the same genre. I would say it has more drama. LOL. I would blame that it only relies on a single twist. Sins of the past. Somewhat 'changing lanes' type of rivalry. Its good if you wanna pass some time but not unforgettable like 'the jacket' or 'groundhog day'. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Director Hong Sang-soo, once again, puts huge effort into delivering a non-pretentious, overly human and interactively strong drama, this time, holding upon the foundations of questionings and doubts towards the deep grounds of love and its consistency, dealing with infidelity, treason and doubt, all from a simple-yet-effective point of view towards a tormented main character that might reflect the director's own personal struggle in such a fashion way. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member There's something inherently icky about seeing subdued maestro Hong Sang-Soo dive into soap-opera antics. His farcical joy appears occasionally, but this uncharacteristically solemn approach doesn't bode well when he's simultaneously being his most straightforward and slight in years. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member "Geu-hu" might not be one more example of the excellence of the south korean cinema that we have been receiving in the past few years. But the korean Woody Allen, Sang-soo Hong proves to be good in creating horizontal and static camera movement, while developing good dialogues and characters, which are complemented by Hae-hyo Kwon's and Min-hee Kim's acting talent. The movie is refreshing, calm, different and, despite the controverse plot, smooth. Some shots, dialogues and voice overs were, well ... meh. Hope to sse a better project from this director.
