      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Dense with detail but light on entertainment value, The Deal turns a potentially riveting subject into a sloppily assembled -- and progressively more implausible -- misfire.

Stuart L It was fascinating until it shifted about 2/3 through and became more predictable. The ending was not believable. But I'd still recommend it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/07/22 Full Review Audience Member Christian Slater and the rest of the cast was good, but it was a lame, boring, and plotless film. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review william s If this does not put you to sleep then nothing will. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member i like this film, i agree that real life is really hard . especially in oil industry Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member The storyline of "The Deal" has a good premise Unfortunately, the screenplay is confusing. The movie's uneven because its thrill factor is propelled through at least half way by withholding important facts about the plot. Both Christian Slater and Selma Blair are great though. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member A solid thriller. The plot is timely, with echoes of Iraq, Wall Street corruption, chauvinistic politicians, etc.. The plot is full of twists but most are pretty predictable. The acting is solid. A very entertaining movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Richard Roeper Ebert & Roeper There's too much of that inside-baseball talk, and too many ridiculous plot turns that require intelligent people to make really stupid decisions, just so the suspense can be sustained. Jul 11, 2005 Full Review Michael Wilmington Chicago Tribune Epstein and Kahn might have been better off leaving the assassinations, kidnappings and cliffhangers to Grisham and made a simpler, more realistic movie about a desperate young banker juggling deals and trying to stay afloat. Rated: 2/4 Jun 18, 2005 Full Review Ruthe Stein San Francisco Chronicle Far from the real deal when it comes to even a modicum of plausibility on a politically hot topic. Rated: 0.5/4 Jun 17, 2005 Full Review Prairie Miller Long Island Press The elaborate suspense revolving around the toxic mix of oil, money and politics that the media only ever seems to brush the surface, makes for heady viewing. Mar 26, 2007 Full Review MaryAnn Johanson Flick Filosopher [T]he feeling of concrete, this-ain't-science-fiction reality the film creates is effectively low-key eerie... Jun 25, 2006 Full Review Todd Gilchrist IGN Movies Works more effectively as a collegiate dissertation than a fictional dissection of people caught in events beyond their control.
