Critics Consensus

The Devil and Father Amorth sets out to interrogate age-old questions of faith, but fails to find enough compelling answers -- or reasons for viewers to watch.

Andrew Whalen Newsweek The Devil and Father Amorth starts to feel slippery, as Friedkin uses the sliver offered by psychologists and neurologists as a pry bar to crack open space for the supernatural. May 23, 2018 Full Review Matt Zoller Seitz RogerEbert.com The Devil and Father Amorth feels at once bloated and slight, like a DVD supplement puffed up to feature length. Rated: 2/4 Apr 20, 2018 Full Review Steven D. Greydanus National Catholic Register There is little, if any, genuinely religious dimension ... It's basically a "boo" movie in documentary form - that, and an exercise in brand reinforcement and exploitation. Rated: C- Apr 20, 2018 Full Review Jack Blackwell One Room With A View With the whole film shot on a static, handheld video camera, both the content and execution fail to keep the attention, and at only 68 minutes long, Father Amorth still manages to drag incessantly. Rated: 1/5 Feb 28, 2019 Full Review Sean Mulvihill FanboyNation.com The Devil and Father Amorth is pretty much just a glorified DVD extra with flimsy production values and a sense of self-aggrandizement. Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 30, 2018 Full Review Joe Friar The Victoria Advocate I get the feeling that Friedkin decided to put the footage out there at the last minute which may explain the documentary's crude form. For those with faith Friedkin's documentary is downright chilling. Rated: 3/4 Oct 28, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member A absolute shambles of a documentary, William should be ashamed of himself for exploiting this poor woman as she's clearly not possessed and is mentally ill and needs medical attention not the attention of a 95 year old Catholic Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review the movie h Movie Rating: 3/10 Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member "As pessoas querem ficar longe do assunto, tanto quanto possível. Quanto mais você se abrir, para pensar sobre essas coisas e você começa a sentir algo sobre essas coisas, mas o espaço você abre para o sobrenatural." Imagino que ele se refira as almas benéficas quanto aos espíritos malignos, assim como nossos pensamentos atarem através das ondas celebrais… O documentário apesar de leve, teve cenas fortes com Cristina sofrendo o exorcismo, pulei essa parte, assisti durante o dia, vai que né… Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Great documentary. Lacks some perspective from the truly non-believing side. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review brad p You're Better Off Watching ‘The Exorcist' Than ‘The Devil and Father Amorth' Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member There are a modicum of interesting facts peppered throughout this documentary, to keep you from turning it off. However, it doesn't present compelling answers, instead repeating vagueries, and asking questions that have been asked for decades... centuries, even. It is good to hear this kind of debate being brought to different audiences, even if answers aren't forthcoming, as it provokes thought and touches on aspects of faith and science. What Friedkin recounts towards the end of the documentary really lets it down, as there is no evidence Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
