The events in The Devil’s Bath are all the more depressing when you realise that they’re based on, or at least grounded in, actual historical events which really make a lot of the modern-day gripes we face seem like child’s play by comparison. The filmmakers do a great job of creating a bleak as Hell atmosphere and an environment that looks cold, uninviting and miserable. It makes you wonder how anyone managed to survive that place and time period. It’s a potent story of depression and loneliness against a fitting backdrop, but sadly the film’s desire to labour every point and stretch ever scene out as long as possible soon plays havoc with the pacing, and the drama is often lost as you’re just wating for events to move on. I like the simple, understated character interplay, with the limited dialogue helping to contribute to our lead’s feeling of isolation, but there’s parts where I felt like the story was spinning its wheels, as if an actor had missed their cue and they kept rolling the cameras until they made it into position. It’s a well-made film that honours it’s subjects by not sugarcoating what they went through, but by being too long and too slow, I fear it might put off people who would otherwise have given it a try, despite the grim material. A film worth seeing, but once at most.

Um filme estilo A Bruxa. Lento, detalhista, sutil e chocante.

interestinggggggggggg... to be honest, besides a few shocking scenes i wasn't expecting, this was a little slow/boring. after reading a few other's reviews I obviously missed the whole point of the film; I wasn't aware this was supposedly based on true events/etc. & after learning what the point of it all was, I gained a newfound appreciation for it. a super intriguing premise that was actually executed pretty well. overall i'd recommend it - i'd also recommend not starting to multitask partway through when you don't speak German, lol.

One of the best to have ever been put out. Its atmospherically welldone enough to keep you going and guessing while it drags....and then blows up in your face like a ted mail.
