Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 8, 2021 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix The comedy/drama The Disappearance of Mrs. Wu has its heart in the right place, but the movie's horrible acting from most of the cast members puts the movie in the wrong place: a cringeworthy, mishandled mush. Gregory W As first generation Chinese American, I could not get through it. The bad dialog ("oh no, a flat tire!") and acting aside, I couldn't get over the fact that the first and second generation women had Chinese accents and the men did not. Emma was not a believable young girl who grew up in LA. She skewed too Taipei but based on wardrobe and styling I think they were trying to convey Valley. I also object to casting any Asian actor as Chinese, like all Asian nationalities are interchangeable. Perhaps there was a cut subplot where the youngest son of Mrs. Wu had been adopted. I stopped halfway through as I couldn't take any more so if that was the "hidden family secret" they discover, then I rescind my criticism on that casting choice. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/09/24 Full Review Lorenzo M #MovieReview: #DisappearanceOfMrsWu 🍿 🍿 🍿 ½ (Out of 5) A Touching Family and Culturally Diverse Drama With A Big Heart! From a story by #AnnaChi and #DonaldMartin, director and screenwriter #AnnaChi weaves a very personal story of three generations of Chinese culture and those traditions, attitudes and personal feelings among a grandmother, a mother and a granddaughter and how they are so very different and yet so very much the same. The performances in this movie are poignant and have a foundation in compassion as #LisaLu playing the grandmother Mrs. Wu, #MichelleKrusiec playing the daughter Mary and #RochelleYing playing the granddaughter Emma were all so well cast and so real that the culturally Chinese dynamic is palatable on the screen. And I'm also give acting nods to #TiffanyWu playing the best friend Karen who helped drive each character and the story. I must give nods to the emotional impactful score as composed by #KennethBurgomaster, the sharp imagery and cinematography by #TonyCutrono and the wonderfully designed film editing of #CeciliaHyoun as art of the reason this film works so well on many levels. I had a chance to speak with the Anna the director and learned a lot of how personal this film was for her and the challenges of putting together a low budget independent film. I would recommend this as an excellent family film about broken dreams, family and cultural dynamics and words not said and said by mothers of all generations. Feelings are real and time spent with those closest to you are very important and should never be taken for granted. See this film with a loved one, like I did, and you'll get it. I think all Chinese people should watch this. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/25/23 Full Review Anna C I love the fact that the story is about three generations of Chinese women in one family! It reminded me of how chaotic and complicated my own family is! I think it will speak to all the immigrant families! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
