Hauntingly bleak and thrillingly ambitious, The Double offers Jesse Eisenberg a pair of compelling roles while reaffirming writer-director Richard Ayoade's remarkable talent.

Alec B It's sort of a pseudo-modernized adaptation of Dostoevsky's story. It's ostensibly complex as a result, but ultimately proves shallow and simplistic. I'll give it a few extra points for Eisenberg's intriguing performance(s). Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/10/23 Full Review zaika - Richard Ayoade's The Double comes only a few years after his directorial debut, SUBMARINE. From Jesse Eisenberg's great performance to Chris Morris' cameo, this film just is an awesome ride, it's like a twister ride at those theme parks, always goes SO SO SO fast, but it's always the best there. THE DOUBLE is a thrilling and fun ride which never fails to disappoint. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/11/23 Full Review Gareth v The comparisons (fairly or unfairly) to Villeneuve's "Enemy" are unavoidable in this doppelganger movie. And while this movie at times is rather interesting and thought provoking, it doesn't stack up compared to "Enemy". Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/03/22 Full Review Audience Member Yeah, so this was an artsy fartsy film. It looked like it may have been a stage play written for twins. It was mildly entertaining. Kate Muir Times (UK) British director Ayoade's second film is jam-packed with witty references, from cheesy sci-fi soap operas to the long-suffering men who populate the Coen brothers' films. Jan 1, 2018 Full Review John Semley Globe and Mail The film's bleakness is almost satirical. It's Brazil drained of the daydreams. Rated: 3/4 Jun 13, 2014 Full Review Linda Barnard Toronto Star The Double invites second looks and close examination. As Simon finds when peering into mirrors, what we see is often unexpected. Rated: 3/4 Jun 12, 2014 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Rather than a faithful modernization of Dostoyevsky, the source material is a springboard for this creative young director to engage in some very ambitious, very intellectual filmmaking. Rated: 3.5/4 Aug 15, 2022 Full Review Michael J. Casey Michael J. Cinema Watching 'The Double' is like hitting the buffet line. So many options, so much to choose from. Rated: 3.5/5 Nov 16, 2021 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse A unique movie, rich in Orwellian details and with good performances, but marred by a difficult, confusing story that may alienate less adventurous viewers.
